had a problem with tractor a few years ago where it was ran with no engine oil, cost me a fair bit to fix up tractor, put a clutch in and did engine over haul etc.... so now someone in their wisdom lost the engine oil dipstick and made one up which was much shorter than the original one... so there would have been too much oil in the engine now.... i know feck all about tractors, mechanic was here earlier and took injectors away to test them and will do more tests tomorrow...he thinks the oil might have been the problem

Best way is probably google the oil capacity. I know it's not much use when you're checking it daily, weekly etc. but fill the right amount at the next oil change and then could you put your own marking on the dipstick for future reference.

Or else track down the right dipstick from a breakers yard

The problem with to much oil is it can bust internal seals especially if she has age as seals go hard.
To little oil and the bearings run dry especially when working on steep ground you need to keep the oil pump feed pipe in oil all the time epically if under pressure.
Maybe get a dipstick on ebay.

    is that the 885?

if so would be a fair detail to make up a dip stick for that , it has a locking mechanism on the top which is need to build the oil pressure

yes too much oil can some serious issues
