Adventure holiday for solo traveller...?!

    Hi All!

    I'm heading away on a holiday this September for about two weeks and was wondering if anyone might have a suggestion as to where to go...

    I'm possibly gonna be on my own and really am into heading off the beaten track, ideally with some form of mountain climbing/hiking/trekking/sightseeing involved. Love the adrenaline fuelled days as well. The problem is with most tours that offer the above is that there is very little option for socialising at night time and having a few beers. Being 32 and single, that would definitely be a plus!

    Have a relatively decent budget. Also have done all of South America and while I've spent a lot of time in the States, I wouldn't mind heading back there again as an option.

    Suppose either somewhere in Europe or Central or North America or Canada would be cool. Does anyone know companies they could recommend? Or even itineraries? No problem just throwin on a backpack and headin off without a guide etc!

    Might be a bit staid but what about the Camino de Santiago?

    Good time of the year for it. Plenty of hiking and walking involved. Lots of other young people to socialise with in the evenings and some nice cities and towns to sight see in along the way.

    +1 for the Camino. I'm hoping to do another chunk of it later in the year, once I figure out my work/ study commitments. It's a great trip, big plus for me was all the interesting people to chat to on the way.

    Was actually thinking about it alright, plenty of hiking but is it fairly easy to meet people there? Sounds like a great idea! Friend of mine did it and was harpin on about staying in old monasteries etc and that there's no social life, although he wouldn't be the most social anyways!

    That's definitely an option! Nice one!

    That's definitely an option! Nice one!

    It is easy to meet people, you can be walking away on your own and someone else will come abreast of you and say "Buen Camino" and a conversation might start from there. It's pretty friendly, people smile and greet each other a lot. You don't have to stay in the refugios (which have curfews and expect all the pilgrims to be out by 8am) there are plenty of Pensions along the way which would be more comfortable and you can come and go as you please. (I went down the pension route as I like having a room to myself!)

    Yea the Pension option is definitely a bit more appealing, like a bit of quiet time and a nice comfy bed, spent enough time backpacking few years ago and just feel I'm getting a bit too old to not have a good nights sleep!

    Looking at the routes, if I do the Camino I might do the last leg, arriving in Santiago and relax there for a day or two.

    Still though, there's still a part of me that wants that bit of an adrenaline fuelled holiday! Ah sure plenty of time to figure it out!

    I'd definitely recommend the Balkans - Bulgaria, Serbia and Macedonia. I used to live in Skopje and we'd go out hiking, there's some really beautiful stuff - and great nightlife in the towns.

    If you're thinking state-side and you haven't tried some of the Appalachian trail, from the little bits I've done I'd recommend it too!

    That sounds really really cool actually! Would love to head over that direction!

    Was thinking about the Camino and not really for me, too much walking, somethin with a bit more adrenaline would be more up my street.

    Is there anywhere else I might get some more info on an adventure travel type holiday for one person in the Balkans? Thanks for that.

    My brother sounds very much like yourself, OP, and a few years ago he went to Kas in Turkey.

    Here's one link to a company that seems to do holidays there - http://www.exodus.co.uk/countries/turkey-holidays/kas - although I've no idea if that's who he went with. I remember him saying that they had pitched themselves in Kas as the activity centre of that region.

    He had a great time, I can find out more details if you like.

    He can't remember! It was longer ago than I thought.... but he thinks it might have been Exodus, which was the link I gave you. Them or Explore are usually good for that kind of thing - and like I say, I remember him saying that Kas was great for an action/adventure type of a break.
