If you don't finish an undergrad course, can you come back later?

Can you temporarily drop out of a course and return in the future when your ready? I finished 3 years of a 4 year undergrad science course and I did pretty well, but I got some issues now and I don't know how long it'll take to resolve them. If I left college, could I come back in say a year or two and start back where I left off (at year 4)? I already took a year off, hoping that'd be enough time but I don't think it is. It'd be a big struggle with my current situation.

You'll have to talk to the college. You can't drop out entirely out of a course and then take it up in a year/2/3. Once you drop out, you're gone. However, as you already have experience with, it is possible to take a leave of absence from the course for a year. Are you currently on the leave of absence and are looking to extend it another year? If that's the case, talk to whoever arranged the leave of absence for you in the first place. I haven't personally heard of a leave of absence longer than a year but that's not to say it's impossible.

But whatever you do, don't drop out if you're ever planning on returning - otherwise you'll have to start from scratch.

I suppose I'd better just go back then. Better getting the degree with a bad GPA than getting no degree. Its a pity though cuz I have a 1.1 average so far.

As I said, talk to your course head or whoever before you make any decisions. It may be possible to take another leave of absence.

If you do go back, make sure you apply for extenuating circumstances for your exams. I'm not sure exactly what the issues you mention are but whatever it is, should be able to be taken into account when your exams are being marked. Keep in touch with your course head too. Let them know your issues. Most lecturers would be very understanding to your troubles and may be able to help you out if you can't make an assignment deadline etc.
