I have an account with Bank of Ireland. Am I allowed to open an AIB account and keep my BOI account, or would I have to close the BOI one?

You can have a bank account in every bank if you wish. If you have millions it would be prudent to spread the money across a number of institutions.

Yes you can have as many as you like, just remember that will mean double bank charges and ATM/credid card duty charges.

Also some banks are charging heavily for accounts with less than €3000.00.

1 option is just keep €500 balance and your first 5 withdrawals each month (either in-branch or at the ATM) are free and standing orders and direct debits free, debit card transactions free.
