Ive been listening to classic hits for the last few months they might have a no repeat 7 -7 thing but what ive noticed is that they seem to play the same classic hits over the week. Its like they have a small pool of hits to choose from. Just an observation.

I've only discovered the station lately. I can only get a signal when I'm in the Dublin area so I don't notice the repeats!! Seem pretty good to me.

People signing up to specifically reply to any sort of negativity at all got to do with Classic Hits 4FM is the norm now. Niall Boylan for instance got a heap of people on his shows Facebook page to spam a rival shows thread on here and say how great he and his show was a few weeks ago, you'll get used to it after a while.

Oh I forgot .... Niall Boylan is fantastic!!! :)

anywho, I was just wondering do stations pay for set pools or music especially old songs and play from them most of the time or do they pay each time they play the song. Like licencing once you pay a licence for a photo or something u can re-use it. As I noticed some songs repeated over a week I was just wondering is that how it worked...is all.

Well most formatted radio stations would play the same songs 3-4 times a day depending on rotation. Remember its a well proven radio fact that most people listen in 15 minute segments.

4fm dont repeat 7am - 7pm, so there is only a certain amount of classics they have to choose from, although any time Ive dipped in, I havnt heard the same song twice.

If only the 'no repeat' feature was available on the piss poor talk show at night, it would be all good!

I listen a bit and you do hear the same songs,i was just thinking recently there must be alot more classic songs out there.

Indeed there are. If you try some of the OLDIES stations Stateside you would be likely to come across these but if 60's is your thing Brian Mathew on BBC R2 Saturday mornings comes up with some treasures which are mingled in with more familiar fare.

What constitutes a classic hit on 4FM. Songs from from which era? I ask as I do sometimes hear the likes of Michael Buble on it

Well I'm ditching it-wall to wall cheese, Stock Aitken Waterman/low charted Eighties sh1te. Gaz and his fetish for low rent female vocalists, and relentless obscure and best forgotten love songs hasn't helped either, given that he pretty much makes up half the schedule by now.

I've persevered with it for a couple of years now, and enough is enough. Niall Boylan on the odd evening for a laugh and that's it.

To my mind, 2FM's music content has improved an awful lot in the last few months, so that's where I'll stick now, for a bit anyway.

Which Toto song? Hold The Line? Rosanna? Africa?

No, they don't. Stations pick their own songs (in keeping with the specific requirements of their license remit), they (usually) keep the playlist short enough (3-400 songs at most, probably) and rotate them every so often.

They pay a license fee to the PPI and keep track of how many times each song is broadcast so that the correct percentage of the license fee gets paid to the right publishers/artists.

great explanation on the playlist thanks for that info , as for the toto song it wasn't one of the big hits which is strange why its played so often. Thanks again

I used to listen to 4fm quite a bit and I feel there seems to be a lot of repitition. They seem to have a certain number of "classic" songs and thats it, they may not be repeated during the day but they certainly are during any given week.

Also they will usually play the same song from an artist, even if there are a lot of hits to choose from. Thats similar to the 80's show on Today FM on Friday nights.

Also the overlapping features "Who de man" and CSI are getting a bit tired I think.

I only listen from time to time, but I think that of late they are playing much more recent stuff. For example I've recently heard Labrinth+Emeli Sandé (they seem to play Emeli Sandé quite a bit) and Pink+Nate Ruess - stuff that's barely out of the current Top 40. Hits, yes... but classic? Not yet.

The Toto song would have been an airplay hit - a record does not need to chart to feature in an airplay list. John Clarke is particularly good for playing the 'airplay' records.

it would warrant regular play :)

With the recent departure of David Harvey, Gareth O'Callaghan is the only presenter left from the original lineup way back in February 2009. Of course, he is not in his original slot. Gareth was the original weekday breakfast presenter (and his show used to finish at 9am). In June 2011, Gareth was moved to the afternoon/evening (3pm-7pm). With the cancellation of the early afternoon talk show with David Harvey (1pm-3pm), Gareth was moved to his current time slot of 2pm -6pm.

The original lineup included former 2FM presenter and RTE newsreader and former 98FM newsreader Jimmy Grealey . Initially, Jimmy presented a music-based program from 9am to 12pm. This was followed by a talk-show from 12pm to 2pm, which was initially presented by Damien Kiberd before weekend presenter David Harvey took over for good. 4FM switched around the 2 programs for a while with Jimmy on from 11am to 2pm after the talkshow at 9am. 4FM moved them back again to the original time slots. Come the big changes in schedule in June 2011, Jimmy was moved to his old 98FM role of breakfast newsreader with Jim McCabe now the breakfast presenter (that combination also happened for a while on 98FM). Then, at the end of 2011, 4FM appeared to drop Jimmy Grealey altogether.

Who else is gone from the original lineup: Brian McColl, Marian Farrell, Maura O'Neill, Michael Comyn, Mark Byrne and Kieran Philips...... and all those once a week specialist presenters. The last of the specialist presenters to go were Dave Heffernan and Bill Hughes. Al Dunne, who was mainly behind the scenes, presented some programs from time to time.

Who has come and gone in the interim: Dave Redmond, Mike Duggan, Brian Walsh, Liam Quigley, Alan Stanford, Ray Shah and Carol Dooley.

Ray is still with the station - he's just not on air.

    I stand corrected.

I just remembered some other names from the original lineup: Tom McGuirk, Derek Davis and Gerry Stevens. Tom used to be on from 5 to 7pm weekdays with a mainly talk-based show with some musical intermissions. Ditto Derek on Sundays mid-morning. Gerry Stevens had a music show from 7pm weekday evenings. Incidentally. the original presenter of the lunchtime chatshow, Damien Kiberd, also had to play some music!

There was never much crossover between Choice FM and 4FM in reality. Choice FM was a temporary-licenced station, which had two runs, and was specifically easy listening. 4FM is licenced as a multi-city over 45s adult station, so the music policy can be much more flexible.

The only common threads I came across between the two stations were as follows.
    1. Kevin Branigan (CEO of Choice FM and of course Radio Nova) is a shareholder via his company Bay Broadcasting which owns 4FM.
    2. The late Jim Kenny was involved behind the scenes at the early stages of 4FM. He was also a presenter on Choice FM.
    3. Sean Brophy was a presenter on Choice FM and presented a jazz program once a week on 4FM.

Apart from the Kevin Branigan connection, which is significant, there is not much crossover there.

    Hi Declan,
John Troy was another late night presenter who covered Sat. & Sun. 10PM to 1AM

    Hi again Declan,
I never managed a gig on Choice although I did The Devils Music on Premier FM during one of their temporary runs. It is true that I presented / produced Smooth Jazz during its 18 month run on 4FM.
Your research is very spot on otherwise. Well done!.
Sean Brophy now on Dublin City FM

Well - you should have been on Choice!

There were a at least two other specialist presenters on 4FM who had connections to Anna Livia/Dublin City FM: Chris Maher and Karl Tsignidos.

So can someone explain why I cant get my much loved 4fm where I live in Waterford co. Once I drive out toward Youghal I can get it - I really enjoy the station.

Waterford isn't in 4FM's coverage area (it's Cork/Dublin/Clare/Galay/Limerick). Unlike other parts of the country which get served well with overspill (eg Co. Kerry), the nearest high power transmitter is in Cork City on 94.8 which is too far away (and would be blocked by WLR's harbour relay on 94.8 anyway) and Youghal on 97.2 is too weak/impeded by terrain.

Online or on mobile apps is the only way unfortunately (unless it's on cable etc in Waterford)

4FM will be lucky to stay going in the rest of the country with their current figures, let alone expand to Waterford. You'll have to make do with WLR/Beat or go online :)

I've heard Passenger and their annoying song on a lot of late. it will never be even the 1st cousin of a classic.
