Car Hire in Spain - Tips?

    Long story short...

For the past 3 years we have gone to Spain and flown into Malaga. We have rented a car from 3 different companies (1 large, 2 national) and every time we arrive there are always extra charges like unknown taxes etc.

We always end up paying another €100 + on top of the agreed price. Is there anyway around this. I always give in and sign off because anyone who knows the collection area in Malaga airport will know how packed and stuffy it is and most people want to leave asap.

I don’t mind about the block on the card for a few hundred euro for insurance.

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks

Have used these in Germany, Italy, France & Spain and never any issues with them adding on extras.

Don't know about Spain but I've rented in France the past few years with Europcar and Hertz and wasn't charged one cent over what I was quoted when doing the reservation on the web.

The smaller firms specialise in quoting low and then zapping you with extras which they know you'll agree to because you've kids asking 'are we there yet?' or you'll basically do anything to get out of the airport and away - false economy.

At the very least and with possibly several obstacles (like the requirement to put down a large deposit), you may be able to hire a car with a debit card but with no plastic at all it's just not possible.
