    Hi there,
just going to high prune some of my PFC trees, and said I'd check on time of year. Better to do now or wait until trees are dormant.

Any tips to reduce infection risk.

Have a decent Silky saw for the job.

    Thanks

dormant season is best, second best is mid summer. Now would appear to be a bit early.

Think I read somewhere that late June is a good time to prune ash, think it was that insect life/activity peaks around now with fresh leaves, but in late June the insect activity is reduced, but the tree recovers faster than if pruned in winter. Big advantage of winter pruning ash is that it is easier to see what you are doing.

In spring the tree is preparing and putting all its energy into wakeing up.
In autumn the tree is preparing and putting all its energy into going to sleep.
Pruning at these times is detremental to the trees health and vigor.

pruning in summer allows the tree to recover somewhat from the pruning before preparing for dormancy becomes an issue.

Pruning in winter has been shown to allow the tree the best recovery from the pruning to the tree. As well as the simple matter of being able to see the structure of the tree.

Target pruning is the pruning method which allowing the trees defences to respond the best to the pruning.

an easy way to remember this is look at you palm (fingers togeather and thumb stuck out - stem and branch).
There is a lump below the thumb and a wrinkle to the upper side. These 2 things are also at the base of a branch. do not damage these two things in the removal of the branch as they form part of the trees recovery mechanisms.
initally remove the weight from a cut somewhere up the branch, a foot or so.
then do a final cut just beyond the wrinkle and lump. :D
