Moving from Sky+ HD to Saorview/Freesat/other

My folks are currently on Sky+ with HD and are looking to move off it. The TV is a Panasonic 42s20 and they're in range of a transmitter so think Saorview is doable, as opposed to Freesat, but going with the satellite is ok if it'll give more programming.

I'm looking for advice on getting the best setup in place without recurring monthly fees (no problem getting decent hardware in at setup time).

A system that is compatible with current TV is highly preferred. Recording capability is important. The ability to get some of the premium sports or entertainment channels would be very nice but not essential. A decent EPG would be nice.

What are the options? Any suggestions?

Saorview PVR for the Irish channels and Freesat+ for the UK channels.

Both offer 7 day epg, twin-tuner recording, series link, auto channel ordering and updates etc. No premium/pay sports/entertainment channels.

    Freesat channels - http://www.freesat.co.uk/what-you-get/our-channels/
    Saorview channels - http://www.saorview.ie/what-is-saorview/

    Saorview PVR - http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-23-WP6500&pages=1&prod=WP6500&brands=WALKER&image=
Freesat+ - http://www.joinfreesat.co.uk/ (rh column for receiver range)

Not sure if your Panasonic 42s20 works directly with Saorview, check the manual for MPEG-4/H.264/AVC video decoding capability.

    Hey T,

Well installation would be a breeze for freesat!

You already have the dish and have the cabling just plug one of these humaxs from the freesat range in!
    http://www.humaxdigital.com/uk/products/

Ive owned a humax foxsat hdr for a few years never any problems.
Of course youll not get any rte etc however if memory serves that tv has a high def freeview tuner built in so get an aerial plugged into it and tune!

    Some side notes to consider
Are they entitled to keep tky box?
I never had sky but if you can keep the box freesat channels maybe recievable on it maybe the recording still works even when subscription has terminated.
    Google or enquire bout that!

The cable or cables from the sky box to sat dish that are currently there remember to watch one and record another there must be 2 runs just to point that out in case its over looked.

Aeriel for freeview may require changing.... Most are normally compatible but youll need to again google that one.

The number of free hd channels on freesat is increasing all the time there are about 4 or 5 on there atm.

If you want a dem of freesat just shout!
    Any Qs let me know
    N.

You can keep the Sky+ box but once you cancel your sub the playback and recording features are no longer available. The box becomes a basic FTA satellite receiver.
