Hi, looking for a nice golf course near Galway city, not too expensive, around €25 per round is about the max I want to pay on a Saturday morning. Anybody got any recommendations please?

Athenry is probably your best bet. Bout 20 mins outside Galway and 25 euro a round. Don't think Galway gc or Galway bay are that cheap.

There are many courses around but for price and standard etc the peeps in the Golf forum will know.

Athenry, the course is 10 miles from Galway city.

    Decent course.

Think Oughterard is 25e during the week (im open to correction) but not sure about weekend. Barna golf course isnt to far out of the city...maybe give them a shout

It also won hidden gem in connaught award this year, reasonable green fee and really starting to get into shape thanks to the great work done by the green staff
Club fundraiser blitz this bank holiday weekend @ 80 for ateam of 4, i'm sure if you are on your own they would find a space in a team for you.

Cant go wrong with galway golf club or galway bay either. Never played portumna but have heard great things..its on my list to play this year.

Oughterard is a great course and brilliant value, well maintained and a good challenge too!

The closest to Galway City reasonably priced is the Glenlo Abbey.
Its E15(7 days a week I believe but definitely weekdays) until June 1st when it rises to around E25 for the summer.

Its a double green 9 hole course though. But it's decent.

Cregmore Park is another option. 18 hole track out beyond the airport. They don't have online booking but are very accommodating.

Spend a few quid extra and head to Galway Bay. Best course around the city.

+1 for Galway GC in Salthill. Greens are in fantastic condition as is the rest of the course. You may get out early on Saturdays as slots usually become available - open weekend this weekend. Or if you book by the Wednesday before hand, you will get a timeslot you want.

Thanks everyone, went with Oughterard, €30 each, looks nice and was the handiest online booking facility. Be nice to get out from the city a bit too.

Glenlo Abbey sold a few weeks ago. Future of golf course uncertain. Members were told that there are plans to improve the course.

In any case six month membership is available now for €175-. Who knows what will happen next year.

Does anyone know what condition Glenlo Abbey golf is in at the moment? Looking to get out for a game soon and Want to go somewhere where won't be too busy. I know it was sold recently so just wondering if its been maintained or not.

I'd imagine the course is gone past the point of no return. Not that I've been out there for many a year mind. Apparently it was top class when it opened first!

It wasn't great the last time I was there, which was around early July. There were puddles on some of the greens and the bunkers were unplayable. Also, the grass hadn't been cut in a while.

We were charged €12 but I'd prefer to pay €20/€25 and get a proper round in somewhere.
Cregmore was nice and quiet the last time I was there. Nice and forgiving for a low-in-confidence beginner, like myself.

not a fan of cregmore or galway. no feature holes. neither very challenging as a golf course. galway bay or barna for me. i was very tempted to actually join a course this year year. might do yet! oughterard have a brilliant deal and its a decent course too

Bumping an old d thread but I'm wondering which place has the best deals on a membership, so you can get a handicap?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,361 ✭✭✭Boskowski

Whatever deal you're going to find its likely just going to be an introductory deal for the first year or such. Its a bit like asking any cheap amateur pilot clubs around. It depends on what you consider cheap. Golf is not a cheap sport what with the massive facilities required. From my area I can tell there is no viable membership option under - say - 700€ per year. Most of them would be around the 1000€ mark.
Easy to find a cheap green fee but membership is a different thing.

If you never played golf then Loughrea do an introductionary offer of €350 for the year. This rises to €505 (plus €22 GUI fee and €50 bar/food voucher) yearly after that. Nice parkland coarse, 20 mins via the motorway from Galway.

Does ballinasloe/athenry/portumna or any other near ones do anything similar?
