Cam/rocker/valve cover. All the one. Is that all your leak was in the pics?

Yes. apparently thats where the leak was found to be.
    Two spots:
Valve cover gasket and oil filter housing. From all suggestions guys say it's pretty simple job to do, so I might do it myself to save some money. Especially now that I have lots of free time on my hands.

I've done it on my 6 cylinder. Took me around 3 hours.

So I assume it's not worth going and overpaying in garage?
I plan to replace oil filter housing gasket, and valve cover gasket.
+ I am thinking of replacing one pulley as guys from E46fanatics said it may shred by belts to pieces one day.

I can't honestly say, all I did was the rocker cover, nothing else. So i've no idea what the other bits are like, or what the rocker cover is even like on the 4 pot. 6 cylinder is handy though. Just take your time, and give it plenty of time to seal when you're done before starting the engine.

Oh yeah by the way, haven't looked into that yet but do I have to use some kind of RTV paste or what is it? some people suggest it helps to seal better?

Not to bad. Couldn't make out what it was in the pics.

This stuff is very good. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volkswagen-VW-Audi-Skoda-Aluminium-Oil-Sump-Sealant-Sealer-Seal-DIRKO-ELRING-/140975500997 I got it locally but it's there too.
    $%28KGrHqFHJDME9!QEysBTBPWzg+f4K!~~60_35.JPG

I stuck the gasket to the cover first with the dirko, just on a table with a few weights on top. Let it dry for a night and then bolt it onto the top of the head. Clean the top of the head with a new stanley blade and some brake cleaner. Stanley blade always perpidicular to the surface or you'll scratch it. Mightn't need the blade. Mine had small bits of rubber stuck to it though. Shouldn't need to seal that surface if its clean and smooth.

Tighten the cover down evenly. Doesn't need to be mad tight or you'll damage the threads.

The oil filter housing gasket was a much more involved job than the valve cover gasket. At least on the 6 cylinder M54 engine. Having said that the valve coer gasket in the N52 6 cylinder engine is way more complex than the two put together!

Well my engine is old one. M43, I assume that will be a bit simpler.

I got the oil filter gasket job done last year. I replaced the Gasket (11421709800) and bush (11421432228). The O-rings around the bush are listed as a separate part on realoem, but when I got mine it already had them on it. Both parts cost buttons direct from a BMW dealer, so I didn't bother going the eBay route.

In terms of cost, my indie mechanic initially thought it would be an easy enough job, but had never actually done one on mine before. As he got into it, he rang to say that it would be a bit of work as the alternator had to come off along with the belts etc. Despite this, he only charged me €60 labour in total, which also included changing the oil level sensor.

Would you say valve cover gasket would be cheap from bmw dealer too? or ebay? I mean ebay seems to offer valve cover gaskets for under 20 EUR think dealer will be around the same? I would go with dealer then, save time.

According to the link below, you would be looking at €30, so a tenner or so dearer. Of course the benefit of going with the dealer for such a relatively cheap part is you know it will be of a certain quality. I'm in no way naive about dealer prices, but if the savings via eBay are little or nothing, then it is worth checking locally.

Yeah, I visit friends place every weekend, he lives in Charlestown just beside joe duffys. Might give them a ring and see what's the deal with these parts.

Okay, things have gone better for me than expected, turns out I don't have any valve cover gasket leak, it's just that after headgasket was done, that part wasn't quite cleaned around by mechanics (as I suppose it's not their job to clean off whatever is not related to performance), so I took that as mistakenly a leak, you know for yourself that oil on engine always looks fresh. So that's a good news. I was quoted 5 euro for oil filter base gasket from joeduffy bmw and it appears they have it in stock so I am off to collect it today. I only need to replace oil filter base gasket and that's it. That seems to be my only leak. I cleaned this morning the engine off oil all parts expect oil filter so will see if any new leaks pop up.

I find its easier and cheaper a lot of the time to source most parts from the dealers themselves. Once you factor in postage and hassle of waiting its not worth it ordering online, in most cases.

Yeah I emailed them yesterday, and I was amazingly surprised with the fast response, I am used to like 2 days waiting for someone to reply email. But they replied in the morning.

    11421709800 - Oil Filter Base Gasket - €5.19
63128380210 - Left headlight gasket - €26.59 each (left and right are the same)
11121721879 - Rubber bolt seals - €1.19 each (supplied individually)
    11121721896 - Flat washers – €3.79 each
    11127568809 – Screws - €4.08 each
    11121432885 - Gasket - €32.37

That's the parts I was wondering about.

I'd recommend to get the bush (11421432228) as well, it won't add anything to the labour and is less than a tenner. The O-rings degrade over time and if not leaking already, soon will.

Gonna ask about those when I get to them today. I am sure they will have it in stock too.

Oh the irony, just as I left Joe Duffy with gasket, got home parked, and Brake pad warning light came up. Good that I am 100% positive that it's the sensor worn because pads were replaced 3k miles ago.

Replaced my oil filter housing gasket:
    IMG_0172_zpsa907bed9.jpg

It was literally fried and melted, no gasket at all just these blue bits melted and stuck.

    Cleaned up:

That looks more like silicone sealant - not good by the look of it.

Might be worth your while drop the sump out of it and check the oil pickup mesh

If there is a lot of it on the mesh, it could cause oil starvation at high rpm = death of nice engine :(

It's too late now, everything is assembled back. I will be replacing and doing servicing in august just before my NCT, then I will do it. But after changing gasket, and refitting belts and alternator it kind of feels car is going much smoother, could be just my own feeling though, I doubt that fixing oil leakage helps engine rpm or sound?

Unlikely - you probably put a few covers and stuff back on better than the last guy
Amazing what'd be resonating and stuff while its actually being driven

Wish I listened to you, you were right. It's leaking from it now, going to joe duffy get that on tuesday then installing. This time should take me like an hour or two to do everything since I done it.
