My wife just bought a 2009 nisan micra with a 1.2 engine, when she went to tax it today she was quoted €570 for the year, now i drive a 2005 laguna with a 1.6 engine and my tax is €514 for the year. When i look at the motor tax website the Basis of assessment for the micra is "co2 emissions" where the Basis of assessment for the laguna is "engine capacity". Why are the cars assessed differently? and why is the micra so expensive to tax?

Cars bought after mid-2008 are taxed on CO2, cars before are taxed on CC. That 1.2 engine is ancient and I suspect puts out rather a lot of CO2 for its size.

From what I can see the K12C 2007-2010 engine puts out 139g/km of CO2, putting it in the B2 band for €280 annually. This link for a 2007 Micra with the same engine would seem to confirm the CO2 emissions as being 139g. You can probably appeal the value at your motor tax office, call them.
