Chipped crown - Will it need to be replaced?

5 years ago I had a root canal and crown placed on one of my front teeth (incisor?). Since I got it the gum at the front of the tooth has always been a bit swollen and irritated, but the dentist said this is normal.

In the last month the pain has gotten worse, and I just put it down to my normal swollen gum. But now I have checked the back of the tooth with a mirror and some of the crown at the gumline is gone, and the root canal underneath is very visible :(

I have an appointment made with my dentist on Thursday, but I'm just worried is there a good chance that the rest of the porcelain will fall off? Is it normal to feel a lot of pain with a root canal when the crown has chipped? Will the crown have to be fully replaced, or can it be saved? Any help much appreciated :)

I would make an educated guess that the tooth is for the bin.... I think that you will be planning an implant... sorry

Sounds a bit grim but go to the dentist and it might be better than you make it sound.
