MacBook Pro - New Hard Drive upgrade

My MacBook Pro is about 2 1/2 years old and the 250GB hard drive is almost at capacity. I've no idea what has taken up the space but it's just disappeared in the last few months.

I'm looking to upgrade the hard drive. Is this easy enough to do yourself - mapping and swapping the drive for a bigger one? Or should I look to drop it into an expert (any suggestions in Dublin area)?

I use the laptop for work so using a portable hard drive to complement the internal is not a practical solution.

I swapped out my hard drive, the physical part is easy enough and a quick Google will show you the steps

As for your info I used a time capsule as I have everything back up on it automatically.

If you have an external hard drive already perhaps you could use time machine to make a back up (If there's enough room)

When the drive is replaced you have a new blank hard drive, then you boot up from the install CD on the new hard drive and install the OS during installation it will ask you to transfer files/restore from back up using time machine if you select that and follow the wizard it does everything for you.

    Simples!

Thanks for the feedback. I have Time Machine drive but it needs updating.

    So to summerise:

    Run time machine.

Buy new drive and whip out old one.

    Install system software from disk

    Run time machine.

    Sound about right?

BTW: what size drive did you get, how much and is there a certain type needed for MacBook Pros?

Spot on. I have mid 2009 macbook pro depending on the speed of the drive I was able to get a 1TB drive. so it depends on what model you have which will allow you to pick a new hard drive
