    Hi all,
Just picked up a 99 nissan micra automatic yesterday.
The mileage stays displayed when turned off and key is taken out of ignition.
The "P" light also stays on on the gearstick.
    is this normal?

No, once the key is removed from the ignition every light should go out. Check again after 15 mins, although I don't think Micras has it - some cars have lights on a minute or so after you remove key (usually the dome light).
Also make sure the headlights are in the off position.

If it's still on after 15 mins I'd say there is some issue, maybe bad wiring.

    Possibly the ignition switch.
You could try spraying the key with wd40 and shake excess off, then insert and jiggle it between off and on (don't start car) a few times. Maybe it's just in need of a bit of lubing.

If this fails go to an auto electrician and let them have a look.

the micras mileage display is always displayed, even if the car is off etc. nothing to worry about.

the "P" on the other hand i'm not so sure.

ah ok, i thought the mileage might be as the clock is below the mileage and the clock normally allows stays on, does in a nissan sunny i used to have.

the 'P' light on the gearstick is very very faint so maybe i just wont worry about it. the battery wont get drained by it.

I just had a look in the GFs Micra 1999 and indeed, this is right.
The mileage display is on all the time.
