I sold a wing mirror on ebay and it didn't go past the reserve of 99p (I'm living in uk at the min). I didn't check about postage and it charged my standard international which is about £8.50. I went in to post office and it will cost £18 to post!

Just wondering what people would do? Should i just tell them i'm not posting and refund? Or ask for more towards postage or should I just pay for the postage to avoid a bad review! have to send it to maritus!

You should have checked the correct postal rate first, so the liability is yours.

However, you could try contacting the buyer and explaining that you made a genuine mistake, but the buyer may insist that he pays the lower rate, in which case you will have to take it on the chin.

£18 sounds an lot for the UK. I know I got something couriered and post was £6.50, this was about 20 kilos and in a box the size of what a small fridge would come in. Think it was parcelforce.

I would leave negative feedback if someone did it to me.

Try the likes of parcel2go or one of the many other online courier firms... always cheaper than the post office (both in UK and Ireland) sometimes considerably so, with the bonus of the item being picked up from whichever address you give them.

I agree with the poster above... the liability is sadly yours and if I had made a purchase and the seller either asked for more cash or pulled out completely then it would be negative feedback time!

I always weigh my items in their packaging before listing and also make sure that extra is added to cover the cost of packaging materials etc. The only time I've had to refund a customer is when I got my sums wrong and overcharged a customer by a fair percentage. I had no complaint from the buyer but made the refund out of courtesy. He has made several further purchases from me now... a little goodwill goes a long way!

When I first started out I took a hit on several items because I had misjudged the postage, simply had to take it on the chin and move on.

No trees were harmed in the posting of this message, however a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

Dunno if there is an economy option with normal post that you could have used. I asked a UK seller for the cheapest postage possible and it was cheaper than his inter-UK price, he dropped from first class to some economy one.

Might take longer and risk neg feedback, but if he gets it and the postal stamp is close to the £8/50 he can't really complain, esp. getting it cheap.

Actually reading again you said it did not go past the 99p reserve? which would mean you don't have to sell it? I am guessing you meant the starting price was 99p
