What model? Not all models have the same inner parts, or take down the same way. Is it a G36C, an AK47, an M4A1 etc? The more information you provide, the vastly easier the diagnosis
I would guess that it's a G36C and that the spring is off of your hop up chamber. It pushes the chamber against the gearbox ensuring a good seal, and without it you can have a huge air leak (resulting in loss of range/power).
If I'm right, remove the barrel & hop assembly, slot the spring over the inner barrel (it will come to rest on the hop up chamber) and reassemble0 -
