Looking to cycle from Maynooth to Gorey over the summer.

AA Roadwatch is suggesting the following route - the route from Blessington follows the N81

Maynooth, Naas, Blessington, Baltinglass, Rathvilly, Tullow, Bunclody, Ferns and Gorey (140 kms).

What is this route like to cycle? How hilly is it?

Are there bike shops in any of these towns?

If you want flat, go the N81 - not too hilly at all.
I'm not pushed on the N81 though (probably because it's my commute) - there can be a lot of traffic, lorries etc. So if you want great scenery, quieter roads and some hills I'd suggest:

Maynooth, Naas, Ballymore, Hollywood, Donard, Glen of Imaal, Tinahely, Gorey (100kms). Google Map here. There are some moderate hills but nothing too serious. Mapmyride shows 5x cat 5 hills on this route.

If you need an en-route bike shop you could change the route to go through Blessington (Tom's Bike Shop). There's also a bike shop in Naas (Cahill's).

Caveat: I've cycled all these roads apart from the 22km from Tinahely to Gorey - so I can't speak from experience re that section.

I live in Gorey and I am originally from Maynooth. I don't cycle personally but I have an old sports car and travel the various different routes between both towns quite regularly. I have to say the route you mentioned is a bit miserable the whole way down but very flat. The east of Wicklow is a terribly depressing place. The route loinnsigh mentioned above is a lot more interesting in my opinion but i'm not a cyclist so I suppose you might prefer the flatter route which would be the one you picked yourself. Loinnsighs route has a lot of very sudden climbs however. One of the nicest drives in Ireland is Maynooth, Celbridge, Newcastle, Rathcoole, Saggart, Blessington, Glendalough, Rathdrum, Avoca, Arklow, Gorey but I'm not sure how fun that would be on a bike.

    Thanks for the replies folks.

At this stage, I reckon I'll cycle to Blessington before taking the N81 down as far as Tullow. Might then take the R725 through Shilleagh and onto Gorey. Any one know what that road is like?

Are there bike shops in Baltinglass or Tullow?
