Bought a new digital box for our bedroom as always fights over the sky+ remote. I can scan for channels using the satellite frequencies so have picked up the normal saorview channels ie rte, tv3, 3e no bother using astra 2, have the option to add more frequencies so want to know can I also pick up freeview uk or sky uk equiv or even any other free channels than just the standard. We are close to the border and currently have a uk sky freeview box in other room which works fine. Sorry hope this makes sense if you know....how do I do it and what info do I need

    Thanks

Need some clarification, what is the make and model of the new digital box?
Is the new digital box a terrestrial receiver connected to an aerial?
What is a UK Sky freeview box? Sky is a satellite subscription service, Freeview is the UK's digital terrestrial TV service - no such thing as a Sky freeview box.

The Irish Saorview channels are not available using the satellite frequencies as they are encrypted on satellite and require a Sky box and subscription to view them. To receive the Saorview channels a Saorview receiver connected to an aerial pointing at a Saorview transmitter is required.

The UK Freeview channels require a terrestrial receiver and aerial. The FTA/Freesat channels require a Freesat or FTA sat receiver connected directly to the LNB on the sat dish.

The box is a labgear HDSFC 2 combined hd satellite & terrestrial receiver. We have an old sky box in sitting room that picks up what I think must be sky freeview channels from the north (no rte on it) we don't pay any subscription for it. We also have sky+ ie in living room and bedroom we use eyes in each room as the box is in the attic, don't know how it is wired tho! As far as I know the satellite cable must go into the attic and connect up there somehow.

Receiving free satellite channels has nothing to do with being close to the border. The satellites are 22,000 miles away in space.

Would I be right in saying that you only have a cable connected to the terrestrial aerial input of the Labgear box?

Freeview is off an aerial (terrestrial). You are not receiving freeview with the equipment you describe.

That existing Sky Box that has the Uk channels is a satellite receiver.

The HDSFC 2 box. This is a satellite box and terrestrial receiver.

If you have an outdoor aerial connected to this box you will receive both Saorview and Freeview channels depending on how close you are to the border.

You will also receive the UK satellite channels on this box as it is also a satellite receiver, by connecting a cable from your existing satellite dish. You can combine both in one channel list on this HDSFC box.

A Sky box without a sub is a basic FTA satellite receiver (not Freeview) and allows you to watch the non-encrypted satellite channels. The Irish channels are encrypted on satellite so you will no be able to view them without a Sky sub.

Is this combi receiver connected to both aerial and dish. With both connected you should be able to receiver the Saorview channels via an aerial and FTA satellite channels via the dish. As you live close to the border, with the correct aerial, you should/may be able to receive the Freeview terrestrial channels from a NI Freeview transmitter.
