Sad news. Laser DVD - Ireland's premiere DVD specialist store - closed down its Ranelagh branch today. I used to live seconds away on Mornington Road, and find this news very sad.

I do hope their store on George's St stays open...

Did you pick up anything in the closing down sale?

No, I wasn't in Dublin this weekend, and only learned about it via their Facebook page (I no longer live on Mornington Road).

Would have certainly tried to, though, had I been around...

    sign of the times unfortunately

Just thinking about that, I can't actually remember the last time I held physical media in my hands

Their selection easily beats any of its big chain competitors. I hope the Georges St store remains open. I'd be very sad to see it close.

I'm a big DVD buyer, even with the advent of downloading. I was in Golden Discs over the weekend and saw the Superman Quadriligoy and bought it, even knowing I could have it in ten minutes by other means and for free. I will always buy classics and really good films on DVD no problem.

But at the same time, I never once came out of this store with anything. I just never found anything of interest, and the run of the mill stuff was always cheaper in other outlets unfortunately. Well that was my experience anyway from the few times I went in.

Always got the impression it was more for people into Anime and alternative/foreign cinema...which I'm not

To be fair, that's exactly the market Laser aims for ('specialist' is even in the tag line!).

Surprised they lasted this long - hell, the retail store in Dublin has been in a near perpetual closing down sale for around two years now, even having tried to setup an Internet cafe deal. Finally seems to be closing this week. Picked up one DVD today as everything was 50% off, but tbh the selection left is pretty miserable (par for the course with closing down sales!).

I'd say George's St. will stick around for another year or two. They have some surprising out of print stuff in their library.

I'd say Netflix had a big part in their downfall, sad for the staff, some decent skins used to work there.

Sad to see used to love browsing the main store when taking a day off college, picked up some great stuff over the years as well

Sadly cinema has become like kindle. Nobody wants to touch it. Nobody wants the
    physical media. All HYPERSPACE.

And there's nothing wrong with that. BUT and there's always a BUT...I like
picking up the film released on a specialist label with all the bells and whistles.

I like the box in the cupboard which reminds me of why I bought it in the first place.
I like all the bits and pieces that goes with it.

    Lest we forget. CINEMA.

Movies going to retail DVD/Bluray so quick these days would also be a big factor I reckon.

Wow, I just noticed last night in town that the shop on George's Street had closed as well.

    Such a shame.

Does anyone know where in Dublin you can actually rent a DVD/Blu now?

Have to say, I'm really going to miss that shop. :(
