"That looks like my bike!!"

I was leaving my flat in Dublin City centre on my single speed commuter bike today. Three middle aged unsavory characters, two males and a female, were walking past as I was leaving. One guy pushed a mountain bike. The other looked at my bike as I mounted it and said loudly to his friend:

    "That looks like my bike!"

I've owned the bike since new, so there's no chance it was ever his. It's an Olive Green Charge, which is pretty rare here in Dublin - I've only ever seen one other.

I cycled away. The guy shouted to his mate again "That looks like my bike!".
As I rounded the corner, one of them roared "Hey youngfella, come here!".

I sprinted off, catching a few green lights I put the head down in case the guy with the bike gave chase. I didn't see them again.

I might be wrong, but given the aggressive nature of how they shouted and the unlikeliness of this guy ever owning a similar bike, it felt like they were trying to mug my bike. I'm glad I didn't stick around to find out.

I'm posting this to ask if this has ever happened to anyone else and to offer it as a warning that this type of thing might be happening in Dublin (I wonder where they got the mountain bike).

    Safe Cycling.

I'd cycle into a Garda station if that happened me.

There was a fair chance that you were about to get accused of stealing it and probably beaten up.

It could also be some kind of diversionary scam to grab your bag or something.
You didn't perhaps have a laptop or expensive phone on your person at the time that they might have spotted?

It's a pretty serious thing to just go around randomly accusing people of stealing your property in the middle of a street.

Definitely a scam, in the hope that you'd bought the bike second hand or something, or that the Gardai or someone was around to take the bike off you and give it to them.

Sounds like you did the right thing Gaffmaster. I'd also tend to report it to the gardai, as they could be running the scam in a small enough area, and you might end up doing someone else a big favour!

A group of guys tried the same thing with my girlfriends bike in Phibsborough. Again, it's a mountain bike, pretty rare, shiney, quite new and can only be ordered online. She cycled away pronto, but they had a mate in a car try follow her. Scary stuff.

Tell the Gardaì, it might help the next time they try it.
