Advice on buying

Is a 2008 Yaris, 1.1 engine with 50k on the clock good value for 5.5k? Bearing in mind I am a student and have to pay for college too. My parents said the tax and insurance will be cheaper on it than a banger and it'll be economical for driving to college everyday. They think it's a good deal and that the car will last years. I am just concerned about forking out as I'm still not fully licensed and only have a part-time job.

As much as it is a nice car, why spend 5.5k on something when a bangernomic car would suit better? A lot of people swear by Ford Fiestas here from around the year 2000. The 1.25 engine will cost ~300 euro a year to tax and insurance wouldn't be much different than that yaris.

Tax is subjective and it would seem like your parents have the low tax syndrome that a lot of ireland has. :(

I'd love a fiesta, had one before but it gave up. They want one that isn't too old because they claim it'll last. I don't know what to do now. They only buy from one garage and it depends what he has in stock - I could be waiting ages for another suitable car to come along. :/ I need to be driving before September.

Is it your money that they're spending? If not, I'd read up on how to buy a car (there is a sticky on this forum about that) and grab something for a little cheaper.

If they're buying it for you, then it seems like a good deal! :pac:

I would, however, get your full license this summer if I were you.

As a broke college student with no job I drive a 1.9TD barge. Yet I can still afford it ;) There's no reason to buy something small like that for long distance driving, you'll hate it. Yet I still have to fork out for fees, dayyyysel, tax, phone bill and pub money :pac:

At least if it has to be a toyota, go for a Corolla instead

Well no I have savings in the bank from jobs I had over the years. Not sure do I want to dip in to that extent though. See the clincher is that I need to get my full licence and I haven't driven in a year now so I need lessons and practice before August. I don't want to be stuck waiting for a car and getting one too late but I don't want to take one for the sake of it either.

I prefer Corollas by a long stretch myself but I suppose the Yaris is handier for tax, parking, fuel consumption and also price in general. There's also the fact that I only have the choice of what the dealer has in stock so I can't really demand certain cars.

It's a half hour commute each way, so not much at all.

I wish I knew more about cars!

All that said, the Yaris is good value when not considering my own situation yes?

Just buy an older yaris. They're not cheap second hand but you'd get a well minded 2000 or around €2k which will also be cheap to tax and light in fuel etc.

If I were you I would educate yourself over the summer and get a car on your own terms, especially if it is your OWN money that you are spending. :)

This thread is a good start: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056198864

Anywho about that car it seems to get good reviews from honestjohn.co.uk (a reputable car web site)

A quick look on carzone seems to show that that yaris is a good deal for the year and price.

Thanks for your advice. As I already said before though it depends on what my garage has in stock. I can't pick and choose what car I want. It's either take this or take a chance that I will be waiting months before something else turns up.
I'm trying to weigh up the pros and cons of this specific scenario.

Thank you. Yes, a quick google of donedeal showed it was a good price indeed. I am just torn between deciding to wait or not and the money situation.

That's a bit of a ridiculous situation tbh. Fair enough if your family likes dealing with them, but that really limits you and if you don't want to spend €5500, this is unfair.

September is 3 months and one week away. Though I understand your desire to get on the road, take your time with this! I also cannot understand why you feel limited to a garage your parents recommend. There are many garages that you could look for a car in, moreso a car that you will like rather than one that these people get in by chance.

If you have any questions about a car you are looking at or if a garage is reputable, you can always ask here. We're all here to help!

Thanks everyone. I know it's a bit of a mad situation but we really trust the owner of this garage. He always does us a really good deal and if there's ever any trouble with a car he is extremely reasonable and honest. My sister
bought elsewhere once and was robbed.
