I have recently moved to new Zealand, not sure if that is important but telling it just in case it is. Our internet has gone to the dogs altogether in the last few weeks. We have a netcomm wireless modem which appears as "on" in the network section but we cannot get onto the internet apart from for a few seconds here and there before it dies again. I checked my work laptop and it works fine on the same network. I can't even get my Mac to work with the Ethernet cable plugged in. Can anybody shed any light on this.

Mod: could you move this to the Mac forum please, it wouldn't post properly for me.

Hi Edelweiss, in network preferences drag your current wireless to the top of known networks, also test your laptop in a starbux or something, also when wired to the router, log into it and check which channel it's broadcasting on and mess around there to see if you can stabilise by changing wireless channels.

Since your (unknown) work laptop works (with unknown connection), it does sound like a Mac-specific problem, in which case it might be a good idea to give some basic details of your setup, including type of Mac (model, year), Operating system version, any peripherals connected and anything else that might be pertinent.

I offered assistance about this on your other thread here...

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056956618

    I'll repost my instructions again...

To determine if its hardware or a software issue...

    Enter recovery mode.....
    • Turn on mac
    • Hold down CMD + R just before the chime keep them held down until the next screen says "Choose a language", let go then. Select English and continue / Arrow on the bottom right.
    • You'll be given four options. At this point, now is a good time to click on wifi at the top right in the menu bar and connect your wifi or test with the ethernet cable.
    • Once you've chosen your method of connectivity, select the option "Get help online", I think it is the third option..This will launch safari with the default webpage of help and what not.
    • Browse like normal .. See if it is intermittent.. If so, Its hardware (Either the mac or your router)
    • If not, Its OSX - A different path will need to be taken here.

Bear in mind, Some webpages may not load correctly i.e. youtube, facebook, icloud.com - This is normal in Recovery Mode.

Let me know how you get on and we'll see what happens next..

Note: This may take a while in recovery, Depending on how intermittent your connection is..

You've copied instead of moving, so now we have two parallel discussions and this one has information missing.
