Many people now realise the Western Rail Corridor project is doomed. The Rail line from Ennis to Athenry has not really succeeded. An opportunity exists to do something useful with the old rail line north of Athenry but it will only happen if the council realise people want to see it happen. If you think putting a greenway on this route would be a good affordable idea then please make a submission to Galway County council, see below:

Galway County Development Plan 2015-2021 is now being drafted. In support of other Galway groups that want to see the Western Rail Corridor being used for something useful like a Greenway lets make our voices heard! The public consultation period runs from the 2nd of May to the 27th of June 2013. Submissions or observations should be marked “Pre-draft submissions for County Development Plan Review” and should be e-mailed to countydevelopmentplan@galwaycoco.ie by June 27th. We have a good month on this one so get your friends on the case: Here is a draft email you can use, add any other thoughts you may have. Lets now get at Galway county council and get them to change policies.
Galway county council as part of its planning process for the development plan 2015/2021 should support installing a greenway on the alignment of the old rail line from Athenry to Ballindine on the county Mayo border in order to protect the rail alignment until such time as a railway line becomes feasible. This could become an important part of the national cycle network and become a critical piece of tourism infrastructure.
