It was called 'Alone in The Amazon'. I think it was an old episode but it was on one of the documentary channels last night (Discovery I think).

I watch it every week and it's usually a positive story about someone getting lost in the wilderness and surviving against the odds.

(I'll put the following in spoiler tags as it describes the majority of the programme. It also might be disturbing to some people).
Last nights one was different however. It was about a man (Benedict Allen) who went to the Amazon to find Eldorado. He set out in a canoe with two guides to help him as well as a stray dog he had found who he described as his "best friend".

Benedict Allen, the guides and the dog then wandered into the rain forest and stumbled across two illegal miners who said they would help him find Eldorado. He accepted. He then lay down to get some sleep, ready to go with the miners the next morning. However he woke up in the night and heard them plotting to kill him. I should have realised at this point that Benedict Allen was a bit of a scumbag as he took the canoe, leaving his guides behind with two murderers and no means of escape.

He brought the dog with him though. Lucky dog, eh? Not really as the dog fell out of the canoe and disappeared. Benedict then tried to get out of the rain forest on foot but got lost and caught malaria. A couple of weeks later he heard an animal following him. At first he thought it was a jaguar looking for food but it turned out it was his faithful canine friend. Apparently this gave him hope.

That was until the two of them started walking and the dog slowed him down. He looked at the dog and thought "there's lots of meat on you". Then he realised the idea was "inconceivable" and he put it out of his head. I thought it was disturbing but was glad he couldn't do it and that it was just a fleeting idea that he found 'inconceivable' and put out of his head.

Well, it was inconceivable for a couple of days anyway. He then sneaked up behind the dog with a machete and killed him. I half watched it to see if he actually went through with it. I was 99% sure he wouldn't. I fast forwarded a little and saw him cooking meat on a fire. It was apparent that he had indeed killed his 'best friend' so I turned off the crappy programme and deleted it from my Sky Planner, as well as deleting the series link. I have no idea how he got out, nor do I care.

Anyone else find this disturbing? The loyal dog had somehow survived for two weeks and found his 'friend' only to be repaid by being butchered by that same 'friend'.

Apart from being disturbing I'm not sure I actually buy it. Benedict Allen didn't seem to show any emotion whatsoever when he was telling his story, even when talking about the dog. I also find the idea of someone trying to find Eldorado a bit hard to believe.
