Push start after removing faulty starter?

Hi folks, wonder if anyone can answer this for me. Starter motor is completely dead in the van (had been starting it with the aid of a hammer last few weeks). I want to remove it to get the details off it so I can go get a new one. If I take it out can I still push start the van without any problems/damage? Any info would be great.
    Cheers

As far as I know, If you push start a petrol car/van it will draw unburnt petrol through the engine and destroy your cat. If you are running diesel I do not think this applies.

Thanks mate, its a pretty old van (89) so i'm not to worried about long term issues. I will only have it for another 6 months max. Does anyone know if it's possible though (to push start with motor and solenoid removed)?

Yeah no hassle to start it like that man, just have the ignition on :)
After that she'll fire with a good push :)

Years back I ran a car with no starter motor for over a month - just parked it on hills! Do remember, though, that a diesel is harder to turn over than a petrol.

It'll start ok but with the starter removed the flywheel will be exposed to road grit/grime which can't be a good thing.
