My Dad's birthday is coming up and I would love to get him a digital camera...Can anyone recommend any particular camera model? He isn't a huge photogapher- but likes to photograph family events, so flash/autofocus/ not too pricey are all considerations.....:D
I am clueless so if there is any particluar brand/model someone could recommend I would be hugely grateful...

Are you thinking SLR or Point and shoot? Whats your price range? Not giving us much to go on really.

Max budget is 450euro...Excuse my ignorance but what is SLR??? I am assuming point +shoot must apply if it means pointing camera and taing the pic!!

You're going to get different opinions here based on experience. Personally, if I was getting a general-use camera today, I'd want something tough, like the Pentax WG-3. Waterproof, shock-resistant, anti-shake, HD movie recording, and well within your budget if you order from the UK (e.g. SRS).

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Point and shoot basically means a compact camera that is used mostly on auto. An SLR is a more professional camera with the bigger body that you can change lenses on and manually change settings.
If he's not that big into photography I'd suggest a bridge camera. They look like an SLR but are a bit more user friendly, and usually less expensive.

Point and shoot is pretty much the camera that most people buy, a simple camera where you point and shoot. An SLR is more advanced and higher quality but requires time and experience to master. A bridge is in between. Easy to use but with many of the manual features of an SLR

Other questions you need to ask before you buy

how much zoom do you need
low light quality (called iso performance)
    is size an issue
will the photos be printed, if so how big (that will dictate required megapixels)

If you want to get something with plenty of bang for your buck you'll have to trawl the review sites

Am much the wiser- SLR definitely not for Dad...I will look into the Pentax WG 3..Standard photo sizes are all that is needed here(for photo albums)...................Was going to buy locally eg Power city, DID as need it in next week or so and also just in case of any probs....
