Hello. I've been finding it really hard to cope at the moment. I have problems in all areas of my life. I have no real support network. All I want to do is talk out my problems but no-one wants to listen. I've had depression my whole life and while I can live a normal life most of time, I have no control when It's going to strike and I take one day at a time.
It's pretty bad at the moment. I've lost important people in my life - they haven't died, just cut ties or betrayed me. I think I'm going to crack.
I've done counselling before but I feel like I need more than that right now.

Is it possible to check yourself in? There was a period of my life I thought I had bipolar. The manic part wasn't very extreme. I felt more like I was high, but the depressive part was so low, the lowest, deepest darkest low I've ever had.

Yes you can voluntarily admit yourself to a psychiatric unit or hospital - or you can be referred by your GP or held involuntarily.

    There's information on it HERE.

    All the best.

    Hi OP

For what it's worth, I just wanted to say that I really hope you get well, and it's really really great that you have the courage and forsite to know that you need help and are reaching out for help.
Very very best of luck to you
    :)

While you can check yourself in you will be assessed very quickly and told whether that is appropriate treatment or not for your condition

The best and most usual way is to be referred to a psychiatrist by your GP. The psychiatrist will assess you and see what your needs are: in-patient admission, community support, day hospital, day centre, outpatient appointments (might be with counsellor or psychologist), home visits from community staff etc etc etc.

Yes you can go to your local mental health inpatient unit but they will assess your needs the same way.

HSE treatment is free of charge and operates all round the country.

I really hope you feel better soon, big hugs to you;)
My sis is mentally ill and is normally referred for a stint in hospital by her GP

Go to your GP and ask to be referred to a hospital. I have a friend who does this from time to time with her stays there ranging from overnight to a few weeks. Best of luck.

Fair play to you for reaching out OP, you are doing the best thing for yourself by asking for help.
Depression is extremely common and when you don't have a support network it's very easy to feel overwhelmed. So I hope that you don't feel ashamed or anything because this is not your fault and it's not a weakness.
I wish you all the best and I promise you won't always feel like this. Once you ask for help doctors do take this seriously and they understand that it's an illness, not a personal failing.
