Rusted Screw on Light housing

I have a 99 focus 5dr and the rear left brakelight has gone. I'd like to replace it but the screw holding the housing in place is badly rusted and when I tried to unscrew it the grooves just disintegrated leaving it useless.

Is there anything I can try myself to get it out/replace it or will the easiest thing be to take it to a mechanic?

    Thanks.

You could try drilling out the screw head remove the headlight then you should be left with enough shaft of the screw sticking out to remove with a pliers or vice grips.

It's worth a shot, once I can get it out I'll be happy.

    Thanks.

    Success!

I was able to wear it down enough to fit a flat head bit in and turn it out.

Here's how much I mangled it,

Thanks for idea, worked a treat. Now I just need to replace the screw.
