I recently found an old ipod belonging to me and when I went to plug it in the computer it failed to recognize it at all it didn't even show up in Itunes. I brought to a repair shop and was told that it was beyond repair and the hardware was borked so my question is Is there many places in Kildare that do hardware replacements and would it be very costly

it's not one of these is it: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056451384
Otherwise you can still get apple to fix it -they'll most likely just replace it- pending on model I'd expect it would cost max €150, but could be a lot less. Check support on apple website.

    Here's the apple service info&pricing:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=servicefaq&geo=Ireland&product=ipod
Looks like your classic will be €141.30 to repair/replace. I'll leave it up to you to decide if that's worth it, but I think you'll be able to pick up an old iPhone (3GS) for that (or less) which can do what your iPod can do and more... Not into the ipods so no idea how much they're going for. Maybe better to look around on adverts and such.
