The monitor you had originally picked out it also a very good one. It will have slightly slower response times compared to the IPS, but it'll have a far greater contrast ratio. It would be a better movie/TV monitor, depends what you're using it for mainly.

Well, the response times is one of those things that varies from person to person. I don't really care about it, but some hardcore gamers can. If you know anyone with different monitors, might want to try them out, see what you think best suits you. I'd happily add 2ms to response times for five times the contrast, but I'm not everyone.

It also depends heavily on your favourite games. You're potentially going to care a lot more about response times when you're an FPS player as opposed to an RTS player (in the latter you'll probably needlessly obsess about your keyboard ;)).

It's hard to tell without seeing things side by side but I'd go with an ips panel all day. I seriously doubt that monitor has 5 times the contrast ratio. Advertised figures are never true when it comes to that. Poor viewing angles compared to ips make that pretty pointless as well unless you're always sitting dead center which you may not be if watching movies.

Yeah, I've a Dell IPS panel in front of me and honestly I'm perfectly happy with it as both a gaming and general usage monitor. I think it's one of those splitting hairs thing, side by side you might be able to tell one from the other but in a blind test you might have quite a bit of trouble doing it unless you'd a good eye for colour.

Actually, those numbers aren't as inflated as you might think most VAs typically do hit anywhere from 3-5000:1 contrast. I think that BenQ gets around 3.5 or 4K. As far as viewing angles, they're not that bad. Certainly miles ahead of TN, and reasonably close to IPS. (When are you going to be using your monitor side-on anyway?)

    Hi all,

I too am looking for a new monitor. I was hoping for something in the region of 24-27" and with a limit of about 200.I am mainly going to use it to hook up my laptop or raspberry pi and watch tv/movies but will also probably use it for playing Wolf ET. I also plan on using it for working on as I only have a 12" laptop which can be a pain when working with word documents etc.

The 24" linked above seems interesting. Has any one got any other suggestions? The current monitor I am used to using before I moved out is a 20" Dell Ultrasharp widescreen.

Forgot to mention the other optino I was thinking was to get a large TV, what would be the upside and downside of that. I was thinking something like this if I went down the TV route http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-12-32CS460&pages=&prod=32CS460&brands=LG&image=

That's only 720p and I doubt it's an ips panel. It's also only 50hz meaning a max frame rate of 50 in games.

A proper ips panel like the one above would be far better for gaming. For watching movies ect the tv would be fine I guess as long as they aren't 1080p movies.

You can get a 27" 1080p lg ips for a little over €200.

Thanks Bloodbath, now to decide between 24" and 27". Would love the 27" but I dunno if my budget will stretch at the moment.
