For the last few years my fats have reduced and protein increased. My current tests are stable at 3.6 fat and 3.6 protein. My urea level was low earlier in the month but todays result is 30.
I am delighted with protein but any way to incresase fat. Have same problem every year

Whats your yield like and wht sort of concentrate are u feeding.Im presuming your grazig firly lush low fibre grass which is a good thing by the way.I had simillar problems some years back and through a nutriotinist problem is now sorted.I have a highish yielding holsein herd and they are been fed to yield of a 35% maize based nut.Yield currently 32.5 ltrs at 3.76 fat and 3.48 protein.Spring calving and as much grass as possible.

Lowish yield about 22 but there is 30% Autumn calvers in there. Would straw be beneficial or would it hit yield

What else is in that nut mahoney, is it a special or off the shelf.

I give mine straw in the yard at milking time it raises butterfat but I suppose it must be displacing some grass which isnt good when its plentifull.

Breed in abit of JEx :P (awaits abuse from Freedom/MF240 about rabbits bullying them etc ha). But nay, what mahoney said all makes good sense, adding in something like soyahulls would improve the fibre in the diet also.

Do you milk record also, you will see if its specific cows that are giving problems, I have one lady who is milking about 33L, but fat figure of only 2.3% in the last milk recording. Very watery dung, with some bubbles so probably still has fluke also which couldn't be helping the situation either. Alongside that, she has had afew too many high SCC readings over the last yr, so will probably be one for the chop sooner rather than later.

I tried straw as well but when grass is as good and lush as it is at this time of the year they didnt want to know about it.As regards the nut it is 16% protein with 35% maize,Soya ,distillers ,citrus ,palm kernell and sugar kane as the main ingridents.I also get mill to include an acid buff at a rate of 15kg per tonne for april may and june.Works extremely well and is supplied by roches feeds in limerick.Standard mix with the exception of acid buff.

Don't do it is right we will have more of the premium for ourselves:):):)

Make straw available............it's a classic case of low fibre your pro is good though
