Fiesta 07 with leak from driveshaft/gear box

    Hi Folks

Wondering if anyone can give me an idea as to what may be wrong with my fiesta. First off, for the last 13 months I've been getting a 'clank' from the passenger side of the car when ever I break. At first I thought it might have been a loose pad on the caliper but its all fine. I could not spot anything obvious and the car was working fine so I left it on the long finger, so to speak. Just today when I was trying to change the oil, I noticed that the area where the drive shaft enters the gearbox is all wet from oil.
Now, not sure if the 2 things are necessarily related but am wondering how serious a leak like this is and if its just a seal, than how much roughly to get it sorted?
    Thanks folks

    Rich

    What mileage?

Are you sure its oil from the gearbox and not grease from the inner drive joint?

You can probably replace the seal on its own but it's unlikely to sort the problem long term as there is likely to be an underlying reason why the seal is leaking on a relatively new car.

Hi, Well, I'm not sure. Its done about 85k. Is it costly getting these jobs done?

    Cheers

It's usually bearing failure that causes seals to go and this is unlikely with relatively low mileage.

Did anything happen that side of the car or was there any work carried out on the drives etc?

I'd still be inclined to think that it may be the inner joint. Check the boot on ir for any cuts or cracks.

Also check to see if the oil is coming from some other part of the engine dripping down on the drive.

Hi, There is no boot on the part where the shaft enters the gear box. Should there be one there normally. It might be the answer to the mess??

The boot will be a couple of inches out on the shaft. It wont be touching the gearbox, rather on the drive shaft itself. It wouldn't have any role in retaining the gearbox oil if that's what you mean.

gearbox output seals leaking are fairly common on fiestas and focus from 05 to 08
