First Day

So today was my first day for a job. Was told that it would be a training day but really I was just in there to fill a gap and had no training, just had to keep asking questions which wasn't really a problem.
I worked for about 4 hours and I wasn't offered a break. Now as far as I'm aware I should have been given one. I know I probably should have said something but when she told another employee to go I assumed I'd be getting my turn too.
Secondly, I have not been told much about my position. I don't know how much I'm going to be earning, when I'll be working or anything. Obviously I know I should have asked these questions but when you're a new person on the scene you don't want to ask too many questions.

Oh really? I thought you had to be offered a 15 minute break after working three hours.

These are pretty basic facts about the job! Why do you not feel you can ask when you'll be expected to work and how much you'll be paid? They're not in fact things you should have to ask about. You should have been told before you started. What's the job?

Are you sure it's even a job?

I know I should have asked but the moment I got in I was set to work it's in a busy cafe and I already explained I hadn't experience. Only realised these things afterwards.

Just ask. They're perfectly reasonable questions. You won't be fired!

I mean I handed in a CV, had an informal interview so I would certainly hope so

Sounds very much like a "trial day". See here; http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=84708451

Some interesting takes that I hadn't previously heard of. Will certainly be getting my facts about this job straight tomorrow.

You really should be having this conversation with your employer rather than a bunch of strangers on the internet. Don't be afraid to ask your employer questions. I am a manager and I like when my team ask me questions; I don't want them sitting there worried or confused or whatever.

You should be asking ALL the questions. Thats the only way to get good at your job.

I know it's just my first proper job so I was unaware of the layout and a little nervous on the first day so didn't put myself forward but will from now on.
