    hi all,
external hdd will boot up only so far and stop and reboot again continuously like on a loop.
ALdi medion HDD to go 650gb.
    anyone know what to do?
could it be the power supply?
    fine up until this.
there was about 10gb of space remaining (out of 650gb) and could this have contributed to it having a melt down?

    No.

If you haven't dropped it, try getting a new case for it.

I think it could be where the power meets the board to the HDD that could be the issue. There was never an external power switch just had to physically push and pull power cable out and in.(it never powered down with the pc).
    thanks

I'm in Galway City, east side, or occasionally Athenry; I have both SATA (probably yours) and IDE enclosures. PM me if you like and I'll test it, save you buying a case and it not work.

Be aware also though, some external drives don't have disks inside that are like laptop drives, and won't fit into standard enclosures, I don't know if this is the case with yours.

tried another inclosure and same result .
SO now how do i get all my stuff off the hdd?
thinking of hooking it up direct to pc to see if it would make any difference.

Sometimes replacing the circuit board can work, but it needs to be exactly the same, not just the same model. Same firmware revision, pref with mfg date within 1-2 months of the faulty one.

What's the make of the disk inside? Aldi/Medion don't make HDDs
If your data is really valuable you may have to go down the expensive professional data recovery route.

not really valuable but all movies and tv shows on it!
SO much for keeping valuable info on these things!
had a 16gb usb sd card reader from aldi as well and that went belly up!
will not be buying tech from them again!

so basically it boots up to a point then stops for a 0,5 of a second then restarts the booting process and this goes on a loop indefinitely !

    anyone help???

TRY booting pc with a linux cd, eg mint 7,fits on 1 cdr.
then plug in the external drive.
mint can read any windows folders ,or files,
    OR plug drive into pc,
use sata data, power, cable .from dvd, drive.
KNOCK off pc, remove pc power cable from esb socket.
    BEfore you install the drive.

look on the power supply, cables,

it may be hidden behind the other cables,
    from the psu .

Its possibly a Seagate firmware issue as pointed out above in fairness, not really Aldi's fault. :) All external hard drives will use a branded disk drive anyways, very few manufacturers make them. You'll likely get a Seagate, Western Digital, Samsung, Maxtor, Toshiba, Hitachi, or Fujitsu drive in them, and that's pretty much named all the manufacturers! ;)

Some PSUs only have one SATA power cable, or maybe two. A Molex to SATA cable would be required in this instance. OP, if your DVD drive is SATA also use the cable from that to power up the drive so you have both disks
