Could someone please suggest a lense to cover a range of 18:250 ?
It would initially be my only lense for say a 550D camera
    Thanks

Really depends on your budget and what you shoot.

    Landscapes? Portraits? Events? Wildlife?
Or do you shoot a wide range of styles?

What is more important in a lens for you?
    Value for money
    Max Aperture
    Image quality
    Versatility
    Autofocus vs Manual focus
    Speed of (auto) focussing

I do mostly portraits so I use prime lenses. They offer excellent image quality, but don't have zoom. When I have a model posing I don't need zoom.

If I was doing landscapes, I would take a look at the Samyang lenses like the 14mm, and for events maybe the Tamron 28-75 (or pricier Canon 24-105 or Sigma 24-70)

For sports/wildlife possibly the Canon 70-200 which I've been tempted by for around 400 euro on Adverts.ie

If you have a kit lens and want a quick, affordable step up in image quality, you could get a used 50mm 1.8 for around 70 euro on Adverts.ie. Great image quality and bang for your buck. After that you can decide if you need something longer or shorter, but you will probably never get rid of the "Nifty Fifty"..

my immediate reaction on seeing the post was 'why did you buy an SLR if you wanted a lens like that?'
i suspect you could buy a reasonable compact with the same zoom range which would cost about as much which would be much more portable.

My thoughts exactly. If you want a jack of all trade lens a DSLR probably isnt the way to go for you. Typically anything that covers that kind of range will do so at the detriment of image quality.

I had a canon 18 - 200 with DSLR I bought (50d). It was the worst thing I could have done, great camera at the time (still). Quality was average at best, i now take the view a smaller range largely equals better quality. Remember you can crop
