Herd Number & Farm Grants

I have two queries and i'm unsure as to the correct person to contact
    to answer them.

Firstly, we have two ponies with a small amount of grass. We have had
them in all winter feeding them and let them out a short while ago.
However, the grass didn't last long. We went into our connaught gold
store only to be told that they had no hay or haylage and we would
have to go on a waiting list. This wasn't good news but we had to make
do. Yesterday my partner received a call from the store to say that we
could get our one bale of haylage. When he went in to get this, he was
asked for his herd number and of course couldn't produce it so was
told come back when he could. I didn't think we needed one of those
    for horses!
Please advise to this asap so that i can sort some feed for my ponies.

Second query, there is alot of land around us being unused either for
grazing or cutting. When we asked the neighbours about renting this,
they advised us that they couldn't as they were in receipt of
government funded grants for these and if they rented them the grants
would be stopped. I find it very hard to believe that the government
are funding farmers to have empty fields in this crisis.

    Please advise asap

There are plenty of neighbours like that ,they might not own it at all. Is it there for yrs nothing on it ... Might be common age land different owners has right to graze on it that would be on deeds ,,don't know much about ponies ,if you call in to a vet they will tell you new regulations since the meat scare ,,,is there any bit of the unfinced land near your house .if so I would put a tempary fiancé on it And any neighbour say it is his let him show it on his land regestary map,,good luck with it a lot depends on how you get on with your neibours. Can cause problems pc310

You apply to Dept of Ag for a Herd No. You will need this if you are keeping BOVINES - I'm not sure about EQUINES, but I don't think you need a herd no for EQUINES.

If neighbour has spare grass, going to waste, why not ask if you can let horse eat it down to improve it. If grass is eaten down, it grows better. Horses also clear the ground of weeds as they eat lots! It is possible that they cannot rent the land, as they are claiming EU grants etc, however you do not need to rent the land, you only want to clear the grass. There is a difference!

That is very bad advice! How could you suggest fencing and using land that is not theirs and then expect the owner to prove the land is theirs? Sneaky dirty approach IMO!

Well the ASAP advice is, if you can't provide for your animals you need to move them on. How people end up with amimals having no feed or ground for them is unbelievable. And then criticise the local landowners for not letting you graze their land.

If you need hay done deal is the best place to buy farming related goods and feed stuff.

The truth probably is they don't want to rent the land to you but told you that story to put you Off asking again.

Not bit sneaky ,,tempary fiancé to feed 2 ponies until they get sorted and grass going to waste ,never enough for the greedy
