Would really appreciate help with this translation for a tatoo.

I've decided to gety my first tattoo. I've been wanting to get one for quite a while, but had a feeling that it needed to be something personally important. It took a while, but I finally came up with an idea, and I've let it simmer in my brain for a while just to make sure it wasn't just a passing fancy. It's not, I still really want it.

Through a few different online Irish translation and dictionary sites I've come up with the following:

Mo mhac - Mo áthas - Mo gháire
Tá tú an chuid is fearr de dom.

Theoretically that should (at least roughly) translate to:

My sons - My joy - My laughter
You are the best of me.

Before I get this permanently inked onto my skin, I'd be most appreciative if someone who actually knows the language could either confirm or correct this translation. Many thanks!

Good thing you asked first! There are a few errors in that.

    I'd put it as follows:

    Mo mhac - M'áthas - Mo gháire
Is tusa an chuid is fearr díom.

Wait for more answers to confirm.

That's pretty funny since my first attempt was in fact "Is tusa an chuid is fearr díom", but I kept looking around and talked myself out of that for some reason.

Originally I also went with "m'aoibhneas" for "my joy". Is there a significant difference between that and "m'áthas"?

    Thanks for the response!

RE: Aoibhneas I'd usually use that when talking about love. Alot of those words are easily interchangable not 100% if that is with athas but you'd be better with M'áthas because 1) you're certain and 2) aoibhneas would take up more skin than necessary imo.

If it's sons you want to have written it would be
    Mo mhic
    Is sibhse...

That's a good point about M'áthas being less letters (particularly as someone who's never been tattooed before). And I'm actually more concerned with grammar and phrasing than 100% accurate meaning. If it ends up being closer to "My sons - My happiness - My laughter" or something I'm not going to worry about it. I just want the sentiment and for it to make linguistic sense.

Yes, it is sons (2 to be exact). Really big thanks for that correction. I'd feel awful it I left Shawn off. lol

So the corrected translation as of now is:

    Mo mhic - M'áthas - Mo gháire
Is sibhse an chuid is fearr díom.

    How is the following pronunciation?

    mə vick maw-həss mə yeera
iss shiv-shə on kwid iss farr dee-um.

Sorry to jump on the bandwagon, but what would it be for girls (not daughters).

Is the quote from anything OP?

No, it's not from anything. I think I came up with by piecing together different quotes I read while searching for the tattoo idea.

I don't understand the question. Could you make it clearer what changes you want explained?

I'm pretty sure he/she just wants to know what the translation for "girls" is and whether it can just be substituted into my quote in place of "mhic" without any further changes.

    Ah, that explains it! :o

    Then it'd be

    "Mo chailíní - - M'áthas - Mo gháire
Is sibhse an chuid is fearr díom."

I went out and got this on Friday.

I'm thinking I'll finish it off with a trinity knot underneath it with Aiden & Shawn's names on the diagonal edges.

    Buíochas!
