being a bit of a snob about my instrument I've always felt that you need to shell out big bucks for quality sound....until today. Got my mitts on one of the Vintage (jhs) p-basses and it is seriously awesome. Puts my Deluxe Jazz/P-bass (which cost three times as much) in the shade for sheer tone.

Given that no-one has money to chuck around any more thought I'd start a thread about good quality cheap basses/guitars.

    What are your experiences?

I got a Squire Classic Vibe Tele last year and it's awesome. I would've been snobby when I was younger and had more cash to burn, but I'm glad I didn't go for a mexican tele as I've never played one as nice as the Squire.
The Vintage stuff is apparently really properly good too. It's nice having a real Gibson or Fender, but you can alot of the way there for a fraction of the cost and that's great if you just can't afford or can't justify the cost. Even though I've never played a non-Gibson Les Paul that felt right.

IMO one of the best "bang for bucks" basses are the G&L Tributes. They are much better quality than MIM Fenders and it is no exaggeration to say that they rival the MIA Fenders. The three most popular Tribs. are the L2000, the JB2 and G&L's answer to the the precision, the SB2. The Tribs. all have the same pups and electronics as their USA cousins (the Tribs. are made in Indonesia to USA specs), and considering the price difference, very little seperates them.

    Very under rated basses indeed.

The G&L equivelent of the Tribute in guitars is the "Legacy". Dont know much about these. Perhaps someone here does.

The Legacy is G&L's S-style, alnico pickup-equipped guitar. There are both USA and Tribute versions of it.

I've heard great stuff about the Squier Classic Vibe Series in both guitar and bass form but Rigsby is right about G&L Tributes too. I lurv G&L.

That Squier looks great too. Gotta play some disco tunes with that baby!

Must check out those G&L Tribute basses, I've heard good things about them too. Really you don't have to shell out big money to get a great sound. Tried the JHS Vintage out last night at a gig and it sounded amazing. Really warm sixties sound (flatwounds helped of course) and great definition.

I remember back in the day practically every bassist started out with the Aria Pro 2. Back then cheap was nasty and you really had to shell out the dosh for a decent sound. Great to see some real gems out there in a decent price range.

That may not be as easy as it seems from a hands on aspect. AFAIK, no music shop in Dublin (not sure about the rest of Ireland, but I have my doubts) stocks them, with the possible exception of "X Music".

Yep, X Music seems to be doing them again. G&L are pushing the M-2000 more than the L-2000 at the moment so they might be easier to find in the coming weeks and months.
