Parking Fine Northern Ireland

Anyone know the implications of not paying a parking fine received in NI? Read an article printed in April saying southern drivers do not face punishment for ignoring a parking ticket but someone suggested that my car could in actual fact be seized if travelling to NI again which I do on a regular basis.

    Anyone able to advise me.

Yes, I have heard that too. The PSNI do not take kindly to being ignored..especially fines or tickets issued.
Why would you want to NOT pay a parking fine anyway? Especially if it might effect your future visits to N.I.?

It's just frustrating that our Garda don't deal with errant N.I. drivers down here when they speed (regularly on the M1), or don't pay the M50 toll!!!

Be careful who's giving you advice, as they won't lose their car will they? Use your common sense, do what you know is right.

(I'm sure this will stir up the usual trolls to jump up and down...watch this thread)

id advise you to pay it... psni has cars equipped with number plate recognition software, and you would imagine everything is loaded onto that. if your there a lot why take the chance?

its funny its complete role reversal depending on which side of the border your on... cars are so law abiding in the north, staying at about 55mph and the ROI cars blast through it, even though i find far less speed enforcement there.

What if the car you're driving (second hand lets say) was given such a ticket in the past when the previous owner didn't pay the fine? How would you be able to prove there and then that it wasn't you that owned the car at the time?

You won't, unless you carry your registration documents around with you.

Thats what I was thinking also but that would mean carrying around your cars log book with you and that could be risky. That and you would not be expecting to come across this problem in the first place either.

Hypothetical (and rare) situation to be sure but not impossible either. Id be more worried if I were closer to NI and/or planned to go up there anytime soon though.

Any follow up on this? I got a ticket a couple of weeks ago & now I've got a letter in the post, demanding payment. I disregarded the original fine because I thought they wouldn't have access to my details. What should I do?

Pay it? It's hardly worth the hassle not to, for the amount of money involved.

Given that he'll be travelling in a foreign country he should be carrying both his registration document and original insurance cert in any event. If stopped, the car can, in theory, be detained until these are produced.

Was it £90 when you got it?

Nope. £45. But I was convinced that the authorities here wouldn't give the NI crowd my details.

Why wouldn't they? Why should they wish to facilitate people acting the maggot in NI?

Do not pay any fines for, speeding, parking or even criminal in Northern Ireland. There is absolutely nothing they can do to get the cash out of you. Now we can debate the morality of the issue but if its just hard cash we are talking about they will have access to your details but whats a few letters ! F**K I get them all the time from the bank. Use them to start the fire with.

You will have a problem if you are in the North again, but be smart don't break the law a second time. Man if their were toll roads in the North I would drive straight through ! My two cent. Don't pay.

if it is like the rest of the UK,parking fines are a civil offence and issued by private companies and not by the police,

For the record. No further communication from them. The car's been sold, so I'm free to re-offend!
