    Hey everyone,

I want to buy a used car from a guy and everything checks out. It's newly NCT"d and checks out on Cartell.ie. My only thing is the car hasn't been taxed in a while. I know that you must now show that the car was off the road if you want to re-tax it but as a new owner I believe you don't have to as there is a new cert of ownership?? The local Gardaí even told me it was fine but you can never be too sure!! Can anyone help me out. Thanks a lot.

New owners are only liable for tax from when they bought the car. If the car is out of date for months, you're not liable for that. However, the way the system works is if you were to buy a car between now and the 31st, you'd have to pay tax from the start of May.

....only if you actually used the car in a public place.
You could buy the car and trailer it home, or you could get the seller to deliver it to your house before filling in the change of ownership details.
Then you simply don't drive it before the end of the month, get the form stamped at your local Garda station, and tax it from the 1st of June.

BTW, you don't have to wait until you get the registration documents back from Shannon before you get motor tax. You can go to your local Motor Tax office and tax it straight away.
