Just watching the 6 One news in which a piece was broadcast about a company that spent two years filming a nature documentary in Ireland, The Secret Life of the Shannon.
The thing here was this company used state of the art cameras to film the programme. These cameras allowed them not only to film super slow motion @ 1500fps, but these cameras allowed them to film in super HD. They then announce that this super HD, super slow mo nature documentary will be screened next Sunday on RTÉ One IN SD. Why can't this stuff be screened on RTÉ Two HD. As the title says - What a joke.

Some people are never satisfied:rolleyes:. I'll be happy to watch it in SD:pac:

Thought the very same thing while watching it.

Same thought came to mind when they said it would be screened on RTÉ1 this Sunday evening, no doubt it'll be repeated later in the year when/if RTÉ1 goes HD.

Maybe a DVD release in super-duper Hyper Def in a month or two so the taxpayer can pay twice?

it will be on one of the UK FTA hd stations soon, possibly BBC. Usually stuff is, especially if its done by a third party.

It was asked on email bag last week, RTE response was that it was made for RTE 1 viewers and that it hopes to switch to HD in the near future.

OP, "What a joke" could mean anything. Can you please use a more specific title next time you start a thread.

As for why a nature documentary is being screened on RTÉ One rather than RTÉ Two, well it doesn't really fit in with RTÉ Two's remit of sports and youth-targeted programming. Unfortunately RTÉ One isn't in HD at present but we do know RTÉ are tendering for the playout suite so no doubt it is on its way at some point.

    Apologies on the thread title.
My point still stands. A look at the schedule for RTÉ Two HD on Sunday 09/06 has a whole evening of programming before the Sunday Game which I think falls well outside the remit you mentioned i.e.
    @ 6:30pm Natural World Special.
    @ 7:30pm Natural World.
    @ 8:30pm Adolf Hitler.
"The Secret Life of the Shannon" could have easily been slotted into the RTÉ Two HD schedule and shown as the programmes producers would have intended - in HD - should those who draw up the schedules had made an effort to do so.

    Absolutely spot on.
Stupid decision to put it on RTE1.
As for RTE2s remit? See above.

Eurovision Song Contest (whatever one thinks of it) was another HD/SD mis-match.

Why can it not be shown on RTE1 first, then try to fit it in to RTE2 in the coming weeks?

They are all RTE after all.

Don't get me started on the scheduling arrangements at RTE TV. The Eurovision warm ups in HD, the actual programme on that below par SD RTE1. Sometimes I look at RTE1 and think, do I need a sight test??!

I welcome RTE being brave in having a HD channel, but they really should showcasing all HD content on it, until they get RTE1 HD up and running. If they are paying for HD content, they should be showing it in HD.

All those good films at Christmas, in HD on UK TV, and in poor SD on RTE1. CRAZY!
