Just looking for some advice on tyres! Currently I have 16.9 R34 tyres on a lamborghini 874-90 gp and they are well worn. I want to get wider tyres and it was recommended that I fit 540/65 R34 (21 inch) or 480/65 R34 (19 inch) bkt agrimax tyres. It is mostly field work they would be used for. Will the extra few inches make much of a diffference in the field? Are agrimax good tyres? Thanks in advance.

In the same boat myself, 16.9 by 34 on a fiat 90 90. Have been advised that going 540 34 Will alter the ratio of the drive to the front axle. To avoid having to fit bigger front wheels also, have been advised to fit 600 by 30 on the back, this i am told Will keep the front axle and the rear in harmony. Any experts out there with an opinion? Have been offered pair of 600 30s firestones , 90% thread,on rims for 1000 euro.

Same here also (sign of the times!)

Found this chart which I presume is accurate.http://www.agrityresdirect.com/conversionV2.pdf

You can also check the specs (circumference) on each tyre on any online dealer e.g. http://www.en.working-tyres.eu/agricultural-tyres/tractor-tyres-radial/firestone-540/65r24-r-9000-evo-140a8/b.html

I fear it may be the rim width (and also the price!) which will catch us out

Anyone know a good source for 16 x 34 rims?

kfk, I have BKT on the back of a digger, wearing OK, probably at the same rate as JCB's own brand ones. But these are 12 ply rating, so I cannot comment on a pure field tyre. They were about 200 each cheaper than the next most expensive make, if I recall rightly.

Farmer, thanks for those chart links. I see that 600x30's are within 4mm of the circumference of 16.9x34, so that would be all right.
Wider rims, perhaps a combine breaker would have something? I know Agrigear in Bailieboro would make/band any rim to any size, if your not too far away to make it practical.
Going to look at the 600's tomorrow, complete with rims, guy who imports a lot of tyres etc. PM me if you want his name and number.

Thanks for the replies. I will be changing the front tyres aswell because they are like slicks at the moment. I figure the 21 inch tyres will be out of the question as the rims are only 14 inches wide as far as I can tell. I want to put on the widest possible. Cant see any downside to having wide tyres.

Only downside to wide tyres, they are irresistibly attracted to sharp objects! spuds of gates, sharp pieces of galvanise, things your baldy old 12x36 would never even notice!

What are the advantages and are the worth the extra cost?

Would wider tyres on fron cut down on your turning circle , ie less lock tyres catching body

down side to wider tyres from what i see, less traction in steep ground, less turning circle as in rear wheel hitting trailer, slightly heavyier steering in some certain cercumstances- loader front links, more wear and tear in same situation.

not worth it for general farm work/ general purpose tractor from my point of view but nice to have when needed.

fert sowing and hedging, times when ground can be soft they are a benefit surely but not for a general tractor work on road or general duty. do help on larger tractors, but the light 4cyl runabouts, na, that might just be me though.

have driven tractors with them and yes they help in the field in soft times but the same tractors are very handy and as such do most work on the farms and the tyres soon get run off, and the reduced nimbleness is a drawback to.

my neighbour busted his new tractors back tyre at 1000hrs n put on a bkt, the bkt is now worn while the far side still has 40% left on it. buy cheap u buy twice

Is a wider tyre better for dealing with muddy conditions? If so what size tyre is optimal? The tractor is a fiat 70 90, four wheel drive with 13.6 38 back and 11.2 28 front tyres. I will be forced to change all four tyres this autumn at the latest. I am thinking about upgrading rims aswell.

I am also after advice about Tyres too. I have a 1994 deutz fahr 4.47 with BKT 420/85/r34 on back and BKT 340/85/r24 on front. I want to raise the back end up a bit cause she lies low but i dont know what new combination to use so as not to upset the gearing ratios front to back. Does anyone have any advice? I would still like to keep my existing rims, 34 and 24, so as not to have to put on 38's on the back as it might sap up to much power.

    Paul.

I'm afraid you won't be able to do that easily Paul as you will be changing ratios, if you wanted wider tyres no problem but not height.

That is my take but hopefully I am wrong

Is there an online chart for ratios/tyre size.

I have wide agrimax tyres on the 398weather and they are a great tyre for the money. Never had a punture in the 2journal years since they were put on

I finally changed all four tyres on my fiat 70 90 4wd yesterday. I got four starmaxx tyres. They are manufactured in Turkey. Including the visit to the farm and fitting the total bill was €1,820.
