If it were me I'd cycle that, 15 to 20 mins at most and the cycle path along the Grand Canal is excellent. Failing that I'd walk, shouldn't take more than 45mins and its a lovely walk along the canal, especially on these bright mornings.

By bus, you can walk to Rathgar Road and use the 15a or 15b bus, both of which will take you to Benson Street around 10mins from Barrow Street. The bus should take around 35mins at peak times.

Is there a cycle path along the dodder? Might be more relevant than the canal.

Cycle by road to the Dropping Well.

Cycle path (south side) to Clonskeagh.

Cycle along Beaver Row to Donnybrook Bridge and Anglesea Rd to Ballsbridge (or from Donnybrook go over the iron footbridge, through Eglington Terrace and Herbert Park to Ballsbridge.

Cycle path from Balllsbridge all the way along the Dodder to Bridge St./Grand Canal Basin.

Luas or Dublin Bus route 140 into the city centre and a DublinBike to GCD.

If the OP uses the Luas option there's a Dublin Bike station just beside Charlemont station. The whole cycle from there to work will be on cycle paths completely separate from motorised traffic.
