iPhone 5 going quiet...

Apologies if this has already been done, I scrolled back a good bit and couldn't see anything.

I have an iPhone 5 that is perfect most of the time, but every couple of weeks or so even though the phone is not on silent it seems to randomly go into some weird 'quiet' configuration where key clicks stop working, music is silent, that 'bong' sound when your email updates stops sounding etc. TuneIn radio thinks it's playing, but it is silent including through earphones. The ringer still rings when I get a call, and I have no problem hearing people at the other end but no other noises seem to work. Most annoying is that my alarm clock app will think it's ringing, but no sound will come out.

I have checked and it doesn't seem to be the vexed 'do not disturb' issue (do not disturb is set to off).

Rebooting the phone always fixes this, but it is very annoying waking up late and seeing the alarm clock screen happily shining but silent.

Anyone have any advice on how to stop this happening?

I had something similar going on with my 4S over the past 10 days or so and it was really annoying - more so because rebooting did not resolve even temporarily, neither did resetting..

Anyway I came across website today which seems to have correctly explained this issue and provided the fix:

The dock part of the phone where you would attach charge cable or fix to docking station had seemingly got clogged with dust/debris (I can easily imagine this happening with children handling with sticky fingers...)

The solution which is still good over the last 2-3 hours was to use toothbrush to try to dislodge any dust/debris.

Seems to be working for me - fingers crossed. Might be worth you giving it a try.

    Regards

Apols in advance ... but when you say rebooting I assume you mean a hard reset and not just turning it 'off' and back 'on.

You won't be sticking any toothbrushes into the lightning port.
