As the title suggests I was hoping people here with experience might give their pros and cons for a vaulted kitched ceiling.
We're in the middle of designing our self build at present and it's something both my wife and I have always liked. I know the first thing I have to do is go and look into the cost to see how much extra it will be but if anyone has any thoughts on the subject I'd appreciate their views.

At the moment we're thinking of a kitchen/living area of approx 9m x 6m with maybe a small mezzanine as well over the actual kitchen part of the room (approx 1 third of the floor space).

    Thanks...

Mezz above kitchen screams fire regs. We need to see plans sections & access egress routes etc. what has your advisors suggested?

No real mention of fire regs. Met with him last night. We had a rough drawing done out and he said he'd come to us next week with draft set of drawings. He mentioned the extra cost alright of the vaulted ceiling but we'd like to look into it more before going with it or dismissing it.

from a construction point of view theres the obvious extra costs involved in an engineered solution. Structural king trusses maybe, extra steel work etc. theres also the insulation and air tightness solutions to be looked at

From fire point of view if the mezzaine is ancillary to the open plan kitchen / living space then i dont envisage much of an issue. If its connected to the upper floors or incorporates a sleeping area then it needs to be looked at in deep regard to fire regulations.

From an aesthetic point of view, larger rooms should have higher ceiling proportionally and i like raised ceilings myself.
