    Hi folks,

I'm looking to get some recommendations for a set of golf clubs for a beginner / high handicap player. I'm 36 years old, male, 6ft tall.

Being a bit clueless about clubs, I'd like to get your advice before the sales people in the shops are unleashed on me. I'd happily order a set online too if I were to get the right equipment. Budget - well I'm thinking €300 to €400. Is this enough for a decent set or should I spend more?

To start things off - I did come across these on Amazon, but unsure as to whether they are ok for someone like myself or if they are rubbish:

    Wilson clubs on Amazon

So anyway, all advice is greatly appreciated! Once I have these sorted, I can head for some lessons...

    Hi,
I would say you are better off with a set of second hand clubs. Lots of clubs over on adverts.ie.
Have a look and post back some links and i'm sure you will get some decent advice.
Have you been playing long and how far would you hit a 9 iron?

    Mike

I've been a hobbyist type player for a few years, I'd head out on the course with friends and just do it for the pure enjoyment. But I've never had proper lessons - I'd like to start taking the game a little more seriously and being improving. I'll be starting from a VERY low standard...

If anyone here happens to be selling a set that may suit please let me know!

What clubs are you currently playing ?

Best investment would be taking a couple of lessons
(Try your local Driving Range Pro).

    Then search the 2nd hand market (adverts.ie / golfbidder.ie / eBay.ie etc etc).

    Good luck & enjoy !

Where are you based out of? Halpenny golf in Swords does a night up in the airport driving range on a Thrusday where they bring clubs down that you can test out. I'm in the same boat as yourself and I;m thinking second hand could be the way forward. Some lovely sets of Ping and Calloway irons on adverts for ~€200.

Bear in mind that if you are buying 2nd hand, you may have to add on the price of regripping @ around €7/club to get the most out of the clubs. This could well bring them very close to the price of a new set.

I have gotten fantastic second half clubs on golfbidder.co.uk for great prices. Clubs are rated on condition and priced accordingly.

They are rated separately on clubface, shaft and grip out of 10, the ones I got were 7/8 rating and in great condition

I have the below for sale - almost a full set.

    Driver - Cobra F-Speed 9*
    Hybrid - Wishon 915 F/H 4-hybrid
Irons - MD Golf SuperStrong 5-PW
    Wedges - Golfsmith Tour-C milled Gap(53*) and Sand(58*) wedges
Putter - Spalding TPM (clubhead is a bit worn and could do with a new grip)
Will throw in a dozen golf balls with the above.

    €150 for the lot.

Definitely get a few lessons before spending serious money on clubs with emphasis on good grip/stance and alignment.
If you can get the loan of clubs for the first lesson or two, the pro could advise on the best clubs for you. (Its sometimes overlooked by beginners whether to have an offset in the irons or not - if you slice the ball, an offset will straighten the ball but if you draw/hook the ball, an offset will turn this into a snap hook!)

I'd suggest then getting a reasonable second hand set to start with - and get the lie angle of the clubs altered to suit your height/swing. You don't want to have unsuitable clubs influencing how you swing in order to result in a straight shot.

Then in a year or two if the bug has taken, invest in a good set of custom fit clubs. Best of luck!
