Nissan note NCAP safety rating, what does it mean

    Hi,
I am considering buying a 2009 Nissan Note, the ncap rating gives 5 stars for adult and 3 stars for children. As far as i can see the lower rating for children is coming from an issue on earlier models that was then fixed by Nissan.

My question is, should this be a deal breaker or is only small issues that have lowered the rating. It would be to be used as a family car with children aged 6 and 10.

Isn't nissan note 4 star occupant?

That's pretty poor considering the test was a lot easier 7 years ago than it is today.

The problem was to do with the isofix mountings which was the subject of a recall.

Here is the relevant video for that car. Looks pretty decent to be in terms of cabin structure after the frontal imapact anyway! I don't know why the ratings are different for children, perhaps it is related to the seat belts being designed for adults and children needing different restraints?

Three stars is still very good. I wouldn't worry about the rating.
Nice car, I have looked seriously at one myself.

The only one listed on the euroncap website is the pre-2009 Note - is that the same car?

Yep, the new note only came out last year.

Bear in mind if it was tested today it'd probably have a shocking rating.
Not saying its unsafe or anything, but its nothing special.

The Note is based on the 2003 - 2010 Micra so it's Euro NCAP rating is never going to be up to today's standards.

Based on the bit of research I have done the 2009 model is actually an improved version of the original release from 2006, as far as I can see Nissan released an "improved" model end 2008 but I don't think it was tested.

Also, based on the report for the child testing it seems the low rating is due to a problem that was then recalled, hence I would assume corrected on a 2009 car and poor labelling on air bags which is not an actual safety concern.

Would I be right in saying that?

Thank you for the comments but with opinions on both side I am still not really sure what 4 star means, is it an unsafe car, is it average, above average, in other words, should i stay away?

Yes I did but it is hard to tell based on a video, I was more going by the breakdown given by the ncap

Great video, and the note has the very same frame as the modus?
we are talking to a Renault garage for this purchase and they told us the engine was from Renault (it is a diesel 1.5) but never mentionned anything about the frame
