    hi guys,

I have an interview next week for a part time clerical position with the dept of social protection. It said in the email not to attend if i don't intend on taking a position if offered one.

I got a call this morning to attend an interview this week with a different job i applied for in the private sector. Now, I don't know what the money is like but it it suits then would I be a fool to take it and not go for public job?

Does anyone know what the starting wage is with the public sector - working as a clerical officer - and if there is a chance of getting full time employment after a temporary role? Do you get much of a wage increase as the yrs go on?

I'm afraid that if i take this other role (IF i get it, (big IF)) then there will be no option to move up in salary, whereas i might have a better chance of increasing my salary with the public job should i be lucky enough to get full time with them....

    Any ideas??

    Cheers..

Never mind what the email says. Attend both interviews, wait for the outcome and any offers made, sleep on it, make decision, inform both parties.

I second No Pants, go to both interviews, take the best job!!!! Nevermind the email, what are they going to do, come after you because you attended the interview and didn't take the job?

Times are tough at the moment, embrace every opportunity with open arms. :) Well done on getting 2 interviews by the way!!!

Unfortunately, temporary positions in the civil service do not become permanent. You may be offered anything from a 10 week to 1 year contract - these days they do not seem to be extended very often. Starting salary for a new hire is approx €420 before tax.

Gone down a fair bit since that. My OH has been working in social protection for a while and (as far as I know) is on roughly 380 a week before tax.

But you're right about the temporary contracts not being made permanent. OP, chances are you'll be involved in the new Public Services Card roll out. If this is the case, then you'll be employed for as long as you're needed (my OH has been there since September) and then let go. By her accounts, its a horrible job as well.

I think that if i am offered the first job it will be before the interview for the second job.

Thanks for the advice, i'll go to both but at the end of the day, it will come down to the money i suppose and €380 before tax is not very much.
