Mick McManus was arguably the most hated wrestler in the UK in the 60's and 70's but purely for the right reason; he was paid to make you hate him so. He was the king of sneaky cheating, dirt bird tactics and out and out chicanery in the UK scene; nobody had a patch on him. That aside, he had an intuitive in ring ability to make the crowd hate him like no other and with impeccable timing to boot. When added to his devilish looks, he had the total package and won the British scene over at a time that valued skill, natural finesse and old world respect of right and wrong over muscle, acrobatics and showmanship.

Mick also worked booking wrestlers in show across the UK and was highly respected by wrestling as a whole.

    May he rest in peace.

I was sad to hear this. My grandfather died before I was born but he liked to watch wrestling, and I've been told his favourite wrestler to watch on television was Mick McManus. I've also been told that the rest of my family used to give out to my granddad for liking McManus because he was such a villain.

When I was first heard that story about my granddad I checked out a few of McManus's matches and got to see what a good heel he was. I wasn't actually aware the man was still alive when I was looking at them. 93 is a fine old age to have reached. God bless him.

I used to watch the wrestling every Saturday on UTV as a nipper. I could never understand why Mick was allowed to 'playact' the way he did. Never realised at the time how much showmanship was involved. He was great. Another bit of my childhood gone.
