Quick Motor Tax Question..

    Morning all,

So I'm about to close the deal on my new motor (pictures and details to follow soon! :)) and I've a quick tax related question for ye as I haven't taxed a car "new" in years - always do it online.

I know I'll have to go in to one of the local tax offices, but what will I need to bring with me these days?

She is currently out of tax a few months so as much as I'd like to have it for the bank holiday weekend, I'll probably have to wait :( or I'll be throwing away money on a month I will get only a few days out of.

The garage mentioned that they could just register it in my name after the 1st though. So if I took the car earlier it'd still be in their name for those few days. Insurance isn't an issue as I'm covered fully comp on other cars, but how does that work with tax.. is there a "garage tax" in the same way as there's garage insurance/plates?

If I have to I'll just wait, but thought I'd see what ye reckon.

    Cheers

I wouldn't worry too much about it, you have proof of just buying it and if stopped will only get a 'producer'.

Yes but if I got stopped say on the 29th May and only taxed it from the 3rd June, would that not cause issues?

    Tough luck says I.
Avoid unnecessary journeys and you should be good.

I don't think I need to say what i'd be doing..

But, why cant you tax it online?

You can retrieve the pin online, and tax it, but if D.O.S is in may, they will look for arrears, if its in june, you can tax it from then on..

Don't all vehicles require to be taxed on a continuous basis?. I thought that the exemption from tax only applied nowadays if the vehicle was being scrapped. Some garage- selling a vehicle without up to date tax.
Get €200 off for such sloppiness.

You think that a dealer should keep tax up to date, on a car that is off the road, could be off the road for many months, and could cost €2,350 a year to tax?

That sounds like a great way to do business......

Yes and normally I do just tax it online, but when you first buy a car don't you have to go into them with the documentation?

Last time I did this was in 2008 but I remember queuing :)

No, you'd just have to pay a month in arrears. ...if you get stopped.

Hi op if you just bought the car then you only pax tax from the day the car is registered in your name.
As posted already the vehicle can still be stamped off road but soon that loop hole will be closed. This means the vehicle will have to be declared off the road from the start not at the end as it has been. If you are caught it will be a big fine and no car.

Well not afaik anyway, only if its a commercial..

I just got a reminder for a car I have here, hasn't been taxed since i got it and it has the pin on the top corner, I'm sure the one that came with the vlc in the post has it on it too.

I actually had a very similar query, so I hope you don't mind if I hijack your thread a little bit! I'm picking up a car today from a garage that has expired tax (Over 3 months so the pin is no good). Can I go into the tax office and tax it before the Vehicle Registration Cert is posted off and returned to me?

no point taxing till you get log book back you will only pay from date of registering new ownership. Pin will be sent with log book so much easier. Waste of time as they have hardly anyone working in the office.

    Alright, cheers for the info.

You shouldn't need to go into the Tax office. I've bought a car this week, which was out of tax and I followed these steps to get my car taxed in a few days (after the transfer of ownership had gone through).

Go here: https://www.motortax.ie/PSE/pseVehicleSearchReceiving.do and search for your reg. As soon as the tax office are made of your ownership change, you'll see a date next to "Transferred to an Individual on" - you can now tax your car online by going to https://www.motarviews.ie/forgot-pin-ui/faces/getDetails.jspx?lang=en and entering your address. Your PIN will be emailed to right away and you can tax straight away.

Rang the local Garda station just to get their take on it and she said that if I have the receipt/details in the car and it's insured it should be fine.

All going to plan then my new car will be ready to go this time next week so :)

Are you sure about that? I was of the understanding that open insurance only covers you fully comp on your own car and only 3rd party on others? But that's only if the car has a valid NCT (if required) and is taxed. You could be opening a can of worms if you were caught and used that...

Trade plates cover anyone working for the garage driving the car, whether it's taxed or not, but you have to have them displayed.

That varies from company to company and policy to policy - gets discussed here quite often, tax almost certainly doesn't apply, and nct requirements differ from policy to policy. best to check ones own docs..

    Similar situation here. :)

New to Ireland and I'm about to buy a car.
It's not new but have not been taxed for a while. And of course I'd like to take it for a ride on this bank holiday (hoping a good weather).

NCT is fine and I've got insurance but not tax yet. Is there a chance to get it taxed before Saturday? Maybe not disk but some kind of print that I can show to gardai in case they stop me?

    Thanks!

Have proof of purchase (dealer's receipt) handy when it comes to gardai stopping you and asking questions.

You cannot tax your car before you had received a logbook back from Shannon in your name.

Just wait and then get it taxed.

*you could save 1/12 of motor tax worth by waiting till Tuesday after Bank Holiday and having such date printed on the receipt, by taxing it from June instead of May. But in that case you cannot drive the car until said Tuesday.

Hmm... but looks like formally I am not allowed to drive a car without tax disk.
Which means if I get stopped I'll be in mercy of the officer. Have anyone had such experience?

I'm checking with my dealer if it's possible to do everything on June 1st -- they are open on Sat. :)

Ok, beazee, thanks for the answers!

I'll also hope this is still true: http://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/gardai-refuse-to-issue-car-tax-fines-224846.html
